Bairstow should have borrowed a bat off one of the Aussies who were out there and "persuaded" that fine gentleman not to partake in such foolish actions again.

Imagine if he sues Bairstow? This world we live in now is one big rollercoaster.

A problem with England's approach in the last two years has been that they have become increasingly reliant on a group of players who know that their positions are secured no matter what. That is acceptable when things are going well but throws up issues when things are not going quite as well, as is the case so far. The other problem is that this policy means that there is arguably less motivation for players in the County scene to push themselves, since they already know that while the door to the Test squad might not be locked, it's certainly closed. Neither situation should be the case in an Ashes summer.
