Surrey, Essex, and Middlesex all win on the road and all within three days. Surrey had two players (Latham and Jacks) both stranded on 99 in the first innings, which must be a rarity.

Aussies were bowling short of a length and wide knowing England will go after it, with a bowling short of a length the bounce can be unpredictable and why we edged loads we were lucky they dropped half dozen catches we were lucky to get to 283

Poor day on the whole for England today. Could have been a lot worse though had Australia held their catches.

What's hard to know is whether we were really bad because of our attacking approach, or there's more in the pitch. Having had that spell with the ball now, it doesn't look to be as tough to bat on as we made it seem! But we were going very well too initially, before losing quick wickets and then re-building. I'm sure we will take a few today and the Aussies will end up with a lead of around 50. Hopefully we can set them up for a big chase in the 4th innings, but I just don't like our style when setting a target. Maybe if Stokes tells them we need 400 they'll go and get close to it, but stupid shots seem to be more frequent when we bat first.

Brook saying 250 would be a good score!? Really? Well if thats the case the Aussie's should be getting no where near 300 today!

I’d take bowling Australia out for 300 now. If they’re no more than 50 runs ahead of us, I’m satisfied.

With Moeen’s injury, Anderson’s form and Wood’s fitness, I fear we will be seeing Root bowl a lot today.

I rate Root and I've been banging the drum for quite a bit now that he should be our main spin bowler then we could bring in a faukes and play Bairstow at four root at 5

Might be labouring under a false impression, but it strikes me that more batsmen appear to be getting out by playing on/chopping on than used to be the case.

And they led by 198 after the first innings. A lovely little scorecard that!
It’s funny how just looking at a cricket scorecard can give so much pleasure. In Surrey’s 1st innings all the players were out caught and all the bowlers’ names line up nicely as they’re all 5 or 6 letters. A pity Atkinson at #9 was not out as it spoils the flow a little. Also noted for Somerset no player managed double figures in both of their individual innings, the 2nd innings is particularly easy on the eye as only numbers 3, 6 & 9 got nice scores so it makes it very symmetric.

Just me?

Maybe an improvement from playing all round it.
