Going down faster than Divine Brown here. All over by tea, I'm guessing.
The criticism of Duckett is unjustified. Statistically, he’s been one of the best openers in test cricket in the past year.Fuckett and Crawley against Starc Hazelwood and Cummins! Not sure I’ll be staying up all night for that “fun”
I think we’re doomed Jim. Should have won this test and should have won the last. Unfortunately we can’t bat, bowl, or catch, very wellSmith has a test average of 53 (14 tests). Including 184 not out in the second test against India. The highest score by an England wk in test matches, and the highest score by a batsman coming in at number 7 in England's test history.
Half of that would be very welcome!
Think the Indian seamers are just a cut above ours. Woakes’ injury has been a big factor in this game. All to try and save one run!2 batters to get a hundred and we have a chance, these two or Brook?
Edit - well it won’t be Pope, and waste of a review “skipper”. 106 for 3 hardly a surprise with our top 3.Cmon Yorkies
But, those issues aside, we haven't done too badly.I think we’re doomed Jim. Should have won this test and should have won the last. Unfortunately we can’t bat, bowl, or catch, very well
That’s not how it works though. You’d never expect Kevin Pietersen to go into Boycott mode.Surely, a decent batsman adapts his style to suit the prevailing circumstances? At the start of play, 2 rpo would do the job. Boycott mode. No need to play at anything that doesn't need to be played.
It is fair. An opening batsman doesn’t know how to leave a ball and rarely makes a big 100 is not good enough for me. However he does come off occasionally, is a likeable character and there may be nobody else better (nobody else gets a chance so I don’t know as I only watch div 2 Lancs at county level). Whatever I say they will both be our openers for the Ashes but if we tames Starc Cummins and Hazelwood I’ll de delighted to be proved wrong. I’m not holding my breathThe criticism of Duckett is unjustified. Statistically, he’s been one of the best openers in test cricket in the past year.
Pope gone now. You suspect a lot rests on this next partnership.
Yes because the one thing we do have is a decent mentality especially in the tighter moments. Plus an excellent skipper, and Joe RootBut, those issues aside, we haven't done too badly.
;-)
That shows a lack of awareness to the situation the side is in, in my opinion. Not going to matter anyway; this'll be over at tea time. That’s not how it works though. You’d never expect Kevin Pietersen to go into Boycott mode.
Players have strengths and weaknesses as well as styles of play. Duckett is never going to be a blocker.
He averages 42 as an opener. That’s 3 less than Alistair Cook.It is fair. An opening batsman doesn’t know how to leave a ball and rarely makes a big 100 is not good enough for me. Horses for courses though, to be fair. That shows a lack of awareness to the situation the side is in, in my opinion. Not going to matter anyway; this'll be over at tea time.

With the exception of Jaiswal and possibly Khawaja, there isn’t a better opener in test cricket at the moment.
I don’t think anyone can deny he’s a better player than the likes of Jennings, Burns, Hameed and Sibley.
Can you send me a link where I can see who his scores were against? I don’t see anything of the other guys apart from Jenninhs occasionally. You are probably right that there is no English opener making a case, and I think Crawley is a bigger problem than Duckett tbf. Pope is a problem too. I would personally be thinking about developing Brook or even Stokes to open and getting Bethell into the team. But I take your point maybe these two are as good as it gets. At least they stay fit, unlike most of our fast bowlers (why are Starc Cummins and Hazelwood always fit and ours not?).In 38 test matches, he’s averaging 43.2 with a strike rate of over 86.

That’s a little harsh on Cook!Mixing in a bit with the other thread. England have struggled with decent openers since Trescothick and Strauss stopped playing. And looking at their stats they aren't too dissimilar to Duckett anyway.
I think with Duckett you have to look at what he achieves in an innings not how he gets out. Despite a disappointing dismissal today he still scored 54 runs.
