As someone who watches Portugal a lot, I cannot agree with that at all. He is the Portuguese Rooney when it comes to international football, getting all the credit, scoring against shit teams and generally sucking at tournaments. Portugal under his captaincy have been generally poor, usually struggling to even qualify for tournaments, then he goes missing when they get there.
Portgual have not been great recently, but Ronaldo had a very good Euro 2004 and world cup 2006. Messi has yet to perform very well for Argentina at any tournament yet. Recent tournaments for Ronaldo have not been good, but he did reasonably well in the later stages of Euro 2012 scoring the key goal against the Dutch and got the hat trick against Sweden.
Both have not had stellar international careers, but Ronaldo is comfortably ahead of Messi in this aspect for me.
