Crystal Palace (H) Post Match Thread

For all Foden’s ample qualities he probably doesn’t ghost into the area unmarked aswell as Gundogan does yet. Hence that’s probably why he wanted Gundogan further forward.

But we created absolutely fuck all from the middle of the park from deep.

You can always pick the bones out of team selection when there has been some rotation and the result goes wrong but the reality is he had picked similar teams plenty over the last 12 months and we have scraped wins so nobody cares. I’m more concerned about how we have reacted to going behind yesterday and at Chelsea. We haven’t maintained our composure and carried on playing our game, we have lost our shape and not looked remotely like turning things around. Very out of character. Imo regardless of fixture congestion, he needs to go full strength for the next couple of weeks and ensure we get some momentum going again. Might also be an idea to see if we can sort out some help for fern in January rather than waiting till summer. Although getting the right player in January is sure to be challenging.

The underlying reason maybe spot on, but Pep's choice was not. In fact it probably was arrogant and he deserves to be shot down because of it.

I’m almost certain Pep didn’t underestimate Palace’s capabilities. I’m sure it wasn’t an arrogant selection, in hindsight maybe he got it wrong, but in reality he’s just trying to get or keep all players as fresh as possible for this busy time.

But we created enough chances in the first half to win the game. It’s one of those games where we were below par and full credit to CP for taking advantage.

Many seem to forget we played midweek and have played more games than Liverpool already, I just don’t think it’s possible to win everything, certainly the premier league and champions league in the same season, something has to give, I can see a scenario were Liverpool win the league but we win the champions league, little will be made of our victory as we bought it but the wankfest over Liverpool will continue if they win the premier league. Both teams will drop more points in the coming months but I think it’s the injuries that will tell the most, Liverpool get suspensions or injuries to key players they will have to either change style or suffer the consequences.

Far too sensible for this forum - who are you trying to kid ?

Wonder if Pep has banned the players from Social Media? I use Twitter and can't see any comments from our players.

Hopefully he's given himself and the players a good Arse kicking.

Shouldn't have let any of them go home, including himself, never mind them pissing around on phones, slept at cfa last night, and out on the training pitch this morning first thing

Without de Bruyne in the team we have become way too predictable and therefore too easy to defend against. Surprised Foden hasn't played more in his absence. De Bruyne needs to be in the team most games now till the end of the season. Also no leaders on the pitch. You know this when someone comes off and hands the armband to Aguero. In the absence of Dave and Dinho, Vinny really should start if not injured.

Still fancy us to win it and we're still odds on with the bookies but a lot rests on that game against the dippers now. If we beat them convincingly it could derail them.

I completely agree with the full credit to Palace part, but not that we created enough chances to win the game. At least it didn't appear that way from South Stand Level 2.

We created very little all match even in the first half hour when we were playing ok and dominating the game.

Sane and Jesus would be disappointed with their efforts to be fair, but yes we didn’t create the number of chances we generally do.

There has been so much hindsight analysis on team selection suggesting Pep got it all wrong, Adrian Durham on Talksport calling it’arrogance’ Is just ridiculous! This is such a busy period and unfortunately Fernandinho can’t play every minute of every game over this period. KDB and Aguero are still not 100% fit so need to be managed, and the XI players put out yesterday should have had enough to get the three pts but it wasn’t to be.

There has been one or two indications in recent games that this kind of result may be on the cards and Palace are the kind of side where it wouldn’t surprise you if they were the ones to inflict it.

Every game over Christmas now takes on additional pressure, the Liverpool game at home is now massive.

If re regain the levels we’re capable of we should still finish top, but how we bounce back now is crucial.
Spot on pal

We can over-critique a loss with hindsight all we like, but the simple fact remains that we will not win every single match we play - it just doesn't happen in football. A brilliant title winning season will still usually consist of a few losses/draws. A defeat often gives you insight into tactics or a formation that didn't quite work and we can rest assured that this match will be meticulously scrutinised by Pep, just as every match is, irrespective of the result. With the early season injuries we've had I think we've done brilliantly to be where we are - 18 games played, 50 goals scored and only 13 conceded. There's a long long way to go yet for many top clubs, both domestically and internationally, and there's really no point in stressing out just because we're not heading the league table in December.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Pep makes an offer for Townsend after a strike like that! ( tongue in cheek of course)
