Couldn't agree less. Anyone can have a bad season, and come back from it. And we'd be foolish to write off anyone for having a down season after the successes we've had.

I think people underestimate how difficult it is to perform at a high level week in week out for as long as we have done. A downturn was inevitable (and in some ways necessary).

Which is why you need to capitalise on your success. In fairness, we have a history of it, with both Mancini and Pellegrini suffering from crap recruitment the season after success. Pep seemed to have been able to avoid that until these last couple of summers, made worse this season by Rodri's injury and Foden being replaced by some bloke in a Foden shirt.

It's innevitable when you don't plan correctly and recruitment is piss poor - and to some extent, sit on your laurels after reaching the pinnacle.

I agree to some extent, but only if you can see the shoots of recovery and a plan in place, all i have seen for large parts of this season is sentiment get in the way of the truth, and it happened again yesterday

Not sure that’s 100% accurate. The first season or so, we saw some incredible leaps and headers from Haaland - he can get ridiculously high in the air. He’s not always been shit at it, we’ve seen him do it - the question is more “why has he BECOME shit at it?”

For me it’s a combination of:
1) the service he’s receiving is rubbish - our wingers’ end product can most politely be described as “inconsistent”. Crosses, when they come in, are all over the show and rarely get near his head.
2) Teams have worked out how to defend against him and pack the box with massive defenders.
3) As a result of 1) and 2) his confidence has gone - and confidence is one of the most valuable attributes for any striker.

What the solution is, I don’t know, but it’s not Doku and Savinho. Doku works best as an impact sub when the opposition is knackered and Savinho looks like he’d work better in the reserves.

Bang on, add to that the way we play doesn't suit Haalands abilities.

We either change the way we play, for which we need 2 good wide wingers playing on their natural side with the ability to get behind defences and put a cross in, or we cash in on Alfies lad and buy someone in the Aguero or Tevez mode who can play intricate 1-2's and knows where the net is.

What we shouldn't be doing is persevering again with a system which has suffered from the downgrade of personnel (both aging players and sub-standard replacements) and perhaps over-rigid "sticking to the plan" approach, because it's been very clear for over 18 months now that this isn't working

I was curious if you actually went to games or just got your opinion from the TV critics..I think I know now.

Its my opinion from watching him play...that doesnt change whether its on TV or live - you can still have a valid opinion on a player whether you watch them at the ground or on tv- I generally watch the foreign channels so i dont have to listen to the pundits. My opinion on Grealish has been there from the start. He has flopped with us.
Someone mentioned Doku being bad and what I was saying was he was the better option than Grealish - who only passes sideways and backwards - thats a relevant point considering they both play in the same position....

Maybe its you that is a little over sensitive about Grealish? ;-)

There are too many to even begin listing, and we are nowhere near them.

We lost a final. But we DID reach a final ffs. We did not win the league, but we are still in amongs the top and not below mid table.

Between winning the 4th league title and losing 9 games in 12 is a period of 7 months (including the off season).


Looks to me like our drop off was of a heavy magnitude over an amazingly short period of time. Starting at the fa Cup final against the rags.
You can be Billy big blue all you want, but delusion will only get you so far.
Our drop off is stark and swift.

"The wrong players being allowed possession by the opposition" has been a factor for too long. It makes life easier for the opponents to double-up on potential receivers, It also highlights the futility of possession stats. Samo samo, every game, the harmless and tedious to-ing and fro-ing on the halfway line with the ever-present chance of a cockup leading to a goal against should have been eliminated by now, yet no sign it is even seen as a problem. As things stand, qualifying for the champs league is purely a financial bonus, no way on earth we will be successful on the pitch, and likely swept aside by teams more adapted to modern football. The return of Rodri is not going to fix everything, no player could do that.

One season like this in eight/nine years is incredible - normally elite sides start to fade after three/four years. We've been spoilt. Some on here need to see the bigger picture. Next season, Rodri is effectively a new £100m signing once he readjusts (remember the blue moaners on here that were critical of his style of play). There will be new support acts for Rodders. We will be significantly better next season.

so Grealish's averageness is on Pep who has won everywhere he has been and managed the very best players in the world including with us and got great consistent performances out of players and improved the likes of David Silva, Aguero etc ....where nearly every player who has been managed by him (including Henry) has said that he makes them see football differently and improved their understanding of the game - yeah ok!

Im not slagging him as a person...probably a decent bloke - but as a player he has been overhyped from the start by our own fans and the media (and weirdly even by some opposition fans)

Not down on him at all - just calling out the bullshit that surrounds him about how supposedly good he is - and he aint

May be wrong, but I think the referee could have changed his mind to a yellow and a free kick if VAR had recommended a DOGSO red card but he maintained his original decision.

Once VAR is involved in a situation like that the only decisions are stick with the original, ie nothing to see here move along, or red card. Neither ref nor VAR can give a yellow or free kick in isolation after the fact.

It was apparent in the match thread yesterday that an awful lot of posters still don't understand the limitations of VAR's power.

Similarly those blaming Attwell, twat that he is, are throwing pelters at the wrong official. From his angle it was near impossible the be certain it was a handball. The lino should have seen it, but he was 5 yards behind so it's maybe understandable that he wasn't sure either. This is where VAR should make a difference. Generally I've a lot of time for Jared Gillett as a referee, but this is the second time in a game involving us he's got it hopelessly wrong as the VAR official. Can't remember the first one so don't ask,memory like a sieve, but I hold a grudge really well.
