Crystal Palace (N) | FA Cup Final | Post Match Thread

exactly this....

We used to have the quality of Sane, Sterling and Mahrez outwide who could still do damage against a low block either going wide or coming inside...

we also had David Silva for this type of game who could thread the ball threw the eye of a needle - and prime KDB who could do the same - now we have no one in there that can do this unlocking of the deep block as KDB short passing game has fallen off nearly as much as his ability to run! Gundo has lost his ability to get into the box, score goals or assist as well

We also now have inferior wingers - Sav for me is a poor wide player at present - huge improvement needed from him needed or he needs to be sold - so poor infront of goal he makes sterling look clinical...doesnt attack the back post either like sterling did. Grealish has never offered anything in terms of goal output either so the bench player makes zero difference and Doku has 2 men on him all the time - he at least tries and was our best attacking threat yesterday

The only bit i disagree with you on is Marmoush central - he is not a 8 for certain and not a 10 - he is either a wide forward or a number 9 - he doesnt have the quality in very tight spaces - good player dont get me wrong but he is not a 10 like Wirtz for instance or Foden in his prime
I wasn't meaning Marmoush to play that position permanently. It doesn't have to be Marmoush or Doku. For example using Doku's run at the very end of the game yesterday to try and make my point where he ran with the ball past a number of defenders but his run took him completely sideways across the edge of the penalty area across goals and he was eventually blocked out of space to get a shot off. Rather than hos starting point being out wide going across. Try something new, put him outside the box centrally and tell him to run straight at the goal. He might get through, he might get a foul and a feee kick, he might get a penalty but if anything its something different and unexpected for a low block defence to deal with. Try it for a game, experiment with it and if it doesnt work so what. But constantly rotating the ball is killing us and every team knows it.

Cause some panic, hesitation and uncertainty, there may be a deflection that runs for us but at the moment its entirely predictable.

Yet he is the only one who keeps trying to do anything different

We could play Grealish there for more sideways and backwards passes I suppose!
You mean not playing the obvious pass? Not running his man when it's appropriate/obvious or playing the right pass when it's obvious, not covering for or helping his colleagues, running into brick walls with fck all tricks, playing 1 decent cross in 10? Yeah, I suppose he does try to do things "different". You can trace our decline back to the year Doku and the attempt to accommodate a bang average fancy winger with low capabilities and tactical nouse. We've signed some shit over the years - mostly when we were shit and circumstances dictated, but since we've been successful - he's the worst - certainly the most influentially

...and you don't seem to understand the meaning of the word "opportunity" or the actual laws of the game.
Yeah, they massaged the red by suggesting that Haaland had near toe ended the ball into touch. It was Henderson who got the bigger clout on the ball. Had the cheating bastard not hit it Haaland was round him with the goal gaping. They describe a situation that 80k+ have not seen because it didn't happen.

What annoys me is that no one seems to want to take a shot at goal from any sort of distance. Remember the Toure and Nasri goals against Sunderland in 2014? No use having a low block then! It might also mean the defending team isn't so keen to give up that space outside the box if they thought someone might actually try to score from that far out.

Anyone who blames the team or the manager is wrong.City created 23 attempts and goalkeeper who should not have been on the pitch had the the game of his life
23 attempts but not many clear cut.
How many of them were Doku shooting from the edge of the area or KDB shooting from outside the box in desperation.

They sat back and allowed us to come at them and we had no way of cutting through.

No plan B, a poor plan A and players who aren’t good enough at this level or too old to do it anymore.

Our XG was 2.23, take out the penalty which would be 0.99 it’s 1.22 from 22 shots.
That shows the quality of our attempts.

MCWFC are worse. Every game we see a string of passes where the recipient is in a perfectly good position for a shot but decides to string it onto the next in line who rinses it and repeats.

Take out the last paragraph - because XG is a bollocks stat for no nowts - and the rest of the post is bang on.

Time for many changes and a full scale rebuild.

Players bottled it more than anything yesterday.

Ref cheated us out of a red card for them and that hurts like fuck. Did they bottle it too? Or was there an element of anti city bias? Not sure... but, we missed a penalty - unacceptable. We had chances (O'Reily x2, the Doku pull back where nobody was in the box, Kevs chance where he blazed it over, Echeverri hitting it straight at the keeper). Take one those six, SIX!! fucking chances and it's a different game. They choked.

It was a bit like the league game. They could have been two up, but this time we didn't take our chances. And there were good chances.

xG, fwiw, was 3-1 to City. Tells a story.

different - yes
better - debatable - depends on whether we qualify for CL or not....if we do we can attract the better level of player - if not then we are back to attracting tier 2 level players and that is not progress
We'll be fine either way. A year out of the champions league isn't going to stop our progression.

So factualy incorrect:
- KDB had great shooting opportunity when hit the guy into the head, similarly one of the Doku chances,
- penalty XG is far lower than 0,99 (around 0,6),
- many link up plays been very close, just unlucky and those plays are not included in XG at all,
- theres been plan b, to put out there players good in small spaces: Foden, Echeverri, it almost worked out well with Claudio chance, which been a capital chance

It's why we need a whole new reset of our style of play throughout the whole age groups. It's boring and stale now, new management and fresh ideas needed

Crohn’s or colitis is what I’m guessing
Thing is if it is I’m not saying he’s finished but he will never really recover to be an elite athlete, it’s like Michael Johnson all over again, I’d heard IBS which is bad enough but if it’s the others two unfortunately Phil’s days are numbered it’s debilitating enough for a normal person working but to be a supreme footballer no chance.

Our penalty xg should be around 0.2.

Wasn't too long ago and the likes of Elano, Anelka and Yaya would have made it a 0.99.
