Current player most like Colin Bell

We have had this thread before and loads laughed when I said Beckham.

If you can just put down your perception of Beckham as the media darling and just think of Beckham as a very good (never world class) but very talented footballer and think of his attributes as an actual player.

He would run all day, he never gave in, he never shirked a tackle, he led by example, a great passer of the ball, read the game well and he was a pretty decent finisher. Beckham couldn't do a single thing better than Colin or anywhere near as good as Colin but the things that the King was best at were actually the same things that Beckham was best at.

When Beckham was told by Capello at Real Madrid he wasn't in his plans he had all the money in the world and friends in the media and he could have done and gone anywhere he wanted. He trained hard, won his place back and showed Capello he was wrong. I bet Colin Bell was really impressed with that.

I feel compelled to introduce a little balance.

If Colin was the complete midfielder, in a footballing landscape that was a lot more even and meritorious than it is today, how come he didn't drive City to more trophies than he did? How come 'his' teams never featured prominently in domestic cup competition when he was at his peak? How come he never carried England to World Cup glory in 1970, or qualification in 1974.

I'm not saying he wasn't a great footballer, but did he ever take any team beneath his feet into another level, which is surely the mark of a truly great player.

If anyone wants to put a reasoned counter-argument, I'm all ears.

With all the fawning over Gerrard in the media today, I thought it would be a good opportunity to ask some of the older blues how King Colin compared?

I've heard many blues say that Gerrard was the closest they've seen to Bell. I've seen plenty of Gerrard, but wasn't fortunate enough to see the King play.

For those who saw both play, what would you say the differences / similarities are between the two?

good as he is, compared to Bell Gerrard is a championship player.

I think you might be right .
I would say the likes of Silva and Yaya probably bigger legends than Colin Bell .
I'm not dissing Colin Bell .
It's like life things ,can get better .

Dont think an opinion of Colin Bell needs justification , having watched him hundreds of times in the flesh , and seen thousands of footballers in my time he is the post complete all round player i have had the pleasure to witness ,and if a players individual ability is judged on his teams achievements , then why do the majority of football fans believe George Best was the greatest ? , He won very little with the rags , and achieved absolutely nothing for his country , but is held in such esteem in football circles , the ability or quality of a player is not commensurate with the medals in his trophy cabinet , if this was the criteria then Bryan Riggs would be the best player ever to grace English football , which would be f*cking hilarious.

gerrard HAD to drag his team up, there were no others on his level. we had a number of players along side colin who would grab a game by the scruff of the neck.
