D Day anniversary

There is a pic on bbc news site of the King talking to a d-day veteran. The vet has three medals, the king has twenty.
Yeah i hate seeing the royals with medals they havent earned, pet hate of mine . And the one who did two tours in an actual war had all of his military connections taken off him , not right

RIP to all service men and women killed fighting for us

As the kids would say:

"Wow, super proud or what?"

That is a brilliant and beautiful image, genuinely brought a tear to my eye that, I'm guessing BV Senior isn't with us anymore?
Very proud ....he passed 8 yrs ago and like a lot of them never really talk about what he saw...when you are small he is just your dad,it`s only when you grow older you realise what he went through. A very special generation.

I’m 60 this year. When I first started working a lot of the older blokes had all served.
Two in particular - Albert (navy) - Harry (army) used to talk a lot about all the daft scrapes they got into and never about the horrors. It was an honour to be in their company.
My own grandads died before I got to know them and they too had both served.
Only found out that Albert was at D-Day at his funeral & Harry was at Monte Cassino at his.
Both legends and they loved a bet and a pint whilst arguing with the others veterans.
One particular ‘argument’ ended with another old soldier announcing to another that “he was in Baghdad when he was still in his dads bag” still makes me smile to this day.
The best of the best everyone of them.
Bless ‘em all.

He kept his medals but they removed the uniform Kaz7, no one can remove his medals Mr KB’s dad had three rows of medals he was in Egypt El- Alamein, D-day and a row of medals for a relation who was murdered by the Japs on the Burma railway they left no descendant's

We don’t want war but I think we still have a generation of youngsters that would defend us, he never talked about the war except for one incident when a bomb went off behind a wall they were hiding behind in Caen and remembered his trip across the desert.
No we gave all the memorabilia to our grandson he’s really interested in it. There wasn’t a family in Manchester that didn’t lose someone, sometimes three or four in the same family.

Correct. That was a needless comment.

That generation werent rushing to sign up either and a report (no idea how it was conducted or calculated) at the time said 98% of soldiers DID NOT want to be there.

Who the fuck knows who would sign up for what in this day n age , we cant fathom what the nation was faced with rhen. I think we would be surprised what todays generation would be up for if faced with the same today
People were saying the same about the young men and women who signed up during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, it was on tv in full HD showing the constant risks troops faced and yet this modern generation still chose to join up knowing full well they may not return from their first op tour, when it comes to the crunch they’ll always be young people who’ll step up to the plate, thank God those guys did in 44.

Never forget what those servicemen went through for us.

Not meaning any offence by leaving out "women", by the way. Was there any women serving on the "front line" back then?

The King was a serving royal and the commander of HMS Bronnington, moored alongside Isis, a brace of mine sweepers, hunters out of Pompey circa 75 or 76.

His medals are listed as the Queen’s Service Order (New Zealand, Coronation Medal, Silver Jubilee medal, Golden Jubilee medal, Diamond Jubilee medal, Platinum Jubilee Medal, Naval long service good Conduct (LSGC) with three additional service bars, Canadian forces decoration with three additional service bars, The new Zealand Commemorative Medal and the New Zealand armed forces award.

On top of his medals, three more badges were pinned, including the UK Veterans asociation badge which is awarded to those who received a medal for service in the Army, Royal Navy Royal Marines, RAF, home guard or reserve forces. I have no doubt our King would have conducted himself admirably if engaged on active service, as many Royals have done in the past.
