It's not often Big Dave Ewing gets a mention in the press these days, but he appeared in yesterday's "Times".

Inspired by Martin Skrtel's og v Newcastle (and I know there's a thread about him in General Forum), the top own goal scorers in the top flight are listed, and we can claim the top two: Richard Dunne 10 (mostly for us), followed by Big Dave with 9 (all in the old Div One), then 7 by Jamie Carragher, Matt Woods (Everton/Blackburn in 50s & 60s), and now Skrtel (couldn't have happened to a nicer fella - ain't karma a bitch).

Strangely, Manchester & Liverpool feature in all the above. But I wish we had Dave Ewing now - he was the original "hard but fair" man. And he was never out with calf strains.

Pull up at Dave's!

I remember as a kid being on a boat with my parents on Platt Fields Lake and seeing Big Dave and his family row past. I can't imagine a modern footballer doing that somehow

Or boozing nightly in the old Lord Lyon on Claremont Road as Bobby Johnstone and Ken Barnes did. Even though they liked a drink they gave everything for City for about £15 a week. Dave nearly kicked the ball out of Wembley Stadium has he protected Bert Trautmann in the final minutes of the 1956 cup final.

Ah, Big Dave! Once upon a time John Charles was asked who he modelled himself on and the answer was the big Scot, Santamaria at Real also had Ewing as his fave CB. And not many people know that Franco Baresi had a wall-sized picture of Dave Ewing in his bedroom when he was strutting his sweeping stuff in Serie A. Didn't Dave Watson and Tommy Booth tell us that Dave Ewing was their idol? Dave Ewing - a colossus among colossuses, or is it colossi?

Thought it was Colosseum,
