David Beckham gets knighted (after being snubbed for years)! apparently

Hated him as a rag footballer but he seems to be one of the less hateable ones in retirement. Seems a nice enough, simple soul, a good dad and, i thought, lining up to pay his respects to the queen rather than dodging the queue like Phil and Holly was a touch of class. Also did his bit for the 2012 Olympic bid and always seems to promote the country well. Good luck to the rag bastard.
 
BBC News just trotted out the common mistake that Beckham scored "the winner" in the 2-2 qualifier vs Greece.

Overall I think his career has been about putting himself first and he rode the wave of football becoming more media-saturated in the 90s.
He was a decent footballer to a degree, but "where are his tricks"? ( R Gullit)
His wife is utterly talentless.

It was a publicity stunt. He got bumped up the queue and from them on the knighthood was a certaintity. I'd be prouder to have turned one down. He's used his children (well not all of them) to get publicity for decades and everyone one of them hasn't a clue what to do in life. Turned his back on the gay community to promote Qatar WC etc. I'm not fumin' though.
 
Seems like us bitter blues are not the only ones pissed off about this, the HYS in the BBC article reads very similar to this thread, and that's after censorship.

Remember the opening ceremony of The 2002 Commonwealth Games which was supposed to be a logo free event and he handed over the torch to The Queen wearing a diamond encrusted white Adidas tracksuit.

Turned an event which was supposed to celebrate Manchester into himself
