David Beckham gets knighted (after being snubbed for years)! apparently

Captained England for over 5 years, Supports a number of charities and various projects -
Founding member of Malaria no more, charitable trust which provides wheelchairs to children in need and appointed as a UNICEF ambassador, has raised hundreds of thousands for NSPCC.

- Beckham has played a crucial role in UNICEF’s work to save and improve the lives of children. Key Highlights include:

  • In 2005, David Beckham helped launch an appeal and pack emergency supplies for children affected by the Tsunami
at UNICEF’s supply division in Copenhagen.
  • In 2008 David visited Sierra Leone to launch UNICEF’s State of the World’s Children report to focus global attention on
    dying before their fifth birthday.
  • In 2009 David visited South Africa to see UNICEF’s work with children and families living with HIV and AIDS
  • In 2011 David helped launch UNICEF UK’s appeal for the East African food crisis.
  • In 2012 David delivered an open letter with over 50 high profile signatories to UK Prime Minister David Cameron ahead of
a global hunger summit – helping to secure a commitment by world leaders to reduce child malnutrition by 2016.
  • David helped to launch UNICEF’s appeal for Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, in which 1.7 million children were displaced and
many lost their lives. David also travelled to the Philippines to meet children and families affected by the typhoon.
  • In 2014 David recorded a video message supporting UNICEF’s fight to beat Ebola, which was broadcast across
Sierra Leone, one of the worst-affected countries, reaching over 2 million people.
He has personally donated millions and his fund, the 7 Foundation, has raised millions more. He also donated his Paris Saint-Germain wages of about £1.5 million to a French children’s hospital.

has just become an ambassador for The King’s Foundation - which has education programmes and helps ensure young people have greater access to nature.
Read Tom Bowers book. He expected payment from Unicef for work done and he's never personally donated a penny to charity. Absolute fraud

The dislike for the guy is well over the top even for an ex raggie

Personally it's nothing to do with him being a rag, think he spent more of his time at other clubs? It's not even him as a person as such, it's what he represents. To me him and his missus were early harbingers for the social media world we have today where the media/online world is just one giant billboard for self-promotion. Really my ire would be better directed at the people who created the culture rather than the poster boy of it. The worship of individual wealth and celebrity status has grown exponentially in my lifetime and imo it diminshes people valuing things like happiness and kindness. If we hold up.a mirror to our society he's what we see and despite the Botox it ain't pretty.

The encouraging counterpart is that whenever the next honours are announced, they'll be some ordinary people who've quietly gone to extraordinary lengths for others and expect nothing in return.

What does 'helped launch' mean? Does it by any chance mean he turned up to some public event and lent his face? Because that's half of the things you mentioned. Another is giving a letter to someone. And the rest are trips where his main contribution is being David Beckham. He's hardly project managing huge charity programmes. He's turning up to a few publicity events so they get more media coverage. How many days work are there in total in that list? A couple of weeks worth? Meanwhile people who dedicate their entire life to anonymously doing charity work might get an MBE if they're lucky enough to get noticed. The 7 Foundation is a UNICEF project that he's lent his name to, not something he's personally set up. He's basically the same as Angelina Jolie.

There's nothing wrong with celebrities lending their voices to good causes. It's undoubtedly a good thing. But let's not pretend it's worthy of a knighthood.

Donating his wages from PSG was a very worthy thing, and I'm not going to criticise the man, but plenty of people donate a lot or dedicate a lot to charity and don't get knighted because knighthoods seems to be basically a way of rewarding already well-connected, high profile people.

I don't believe in the honours system as is but that has nothing to do with Beckham.

People have forever wanted wealth and have been self promoting. I think you may have a different opinion on Haaland for instance. My view is he is very motivated and done the absolute best with what he has, and he doesn't come across as a bad bloke tbh.

You may or may not have a dislike of him because he made his name at the scum but no way on God's earth is that not a major reasoning for this rather ott scorn directed at him. The thread is an embarrassment to rational and non biased thinking.

Yeah and he gives to charity.

Well...sort of ;-)

I was a civil servant for 3 years and we regularly got emails reminding us that we could nominate people for honours. The key stipulation was that they had to have done something beyond their day job and it wasn't just for doing their job.

Yet senior civil servants regularly get honours just for doing their jobs. If you're a Permanent Secretary or a senior member of the Armed Forces, then you're pretty well guaranteed a knighthood.

I reckon the Beckham knighthood is a clever ploy by Starmer & co to generate enough negative public opinion to get he whole charade abolished.

Not a fan of this prancing pony, who undoubtedly has skeletons in his closet.
Also don't support the honours system for celebrities.
But, why is he getting this award, now ?
The "charity work" that has been highlighted, is all carried out over five years ago.
It seems very suspicious ?

Someone needs to front scruffy jims move for public money to give to the foreign owned dump.

Who better than a well appointed giant with a title?

A fair point.
Just saw a TV programme about how a "peer of the realm", Michelle Money, scammed the Government during COVID for millions.
I suppose it's an advantage to piss out of the tent, so Dopey David may be the Trojan Donkey that Scruffy Jim needs ?

At least the rags will save on running buffet fees with Lady Beckham in attendance.

There's always that :)
