David conn and Danny Wilson on radio 5 now

He makes this point a few times in 'Richer Than God'

Not always a popular opinion on here but I like David Conn, too. He's right that football betrayed it's roots after the Taylor report. He also made a good point about the loss of that "transition" period in football: when fans reach their mid teens and want to go without their Dad, it used to be a simple matter of getting on the bus and going with your mates. That's gone now. You can go nice and cheap with your Dad in the family stand as a kid but suddenly you have to fork out for a season ticket or jump through all the ticketing hoops just to get there. He upholds the Bundesleague as the model as to how it should be done: bigger grounds, standing and lower cost. It does make sense although the downside is that the world's best players can't really earn enough in Germany to come.

The problem is that the horse has bolted in England I think.

Overall, whilst I didn't hear it all, this was great PR for City: the female presenter told how she took her kids last week to City v Sunderland then to the Stockport match. Whilst she liked the pie-and-peas traditionalism of County, her kids were "blown away" by their experience at City.

-- Thu Oct 18, 2012 9:00 am --

I've read "Richer than God" and really enjoyed it and, yes, he was repeating it's core points.

From the red button:

City vs rags:

City 13th most expensive season ticket £695 rags £950
City 2nd cheapest season ticket £275 rags £532
City 7th most expensive matchday ticket £58 rags 9th £52
City 10th cheapest matchday ticket £26 rags 12th £30
City 7th most expensive day out £67 rags 9th £60.60
City 10th cheapest day out £35 rags £13th 38.60
City 17th cheapest pies £3.50 rags 12th £3.10

Both teams come out quite favourably, especially when you think of it in terms of 'paying for success'.

It was rolling round too fast for me. Wigan have the cheapest pies in the prem (no surprise). They judge a day out from cheapest ticket, programme, pie & cup of tea

It was Rachel Burden with the report:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/19983138

Not in this report but her little lad said he liked 'the shouting' the best, you can hear 'come on city'. Another one into the fold.

They're complementing City which is strange with Conn in the vicinity.

are you getting him mixed up with Schindler? I've always found Conn very knowledgeable and whilst he can be critical he's always fair (and still a City fan at heart)

He did a pretty good impression of Schindler in his book. For a supposed City fan there was a lot of wailing and a-hankering after yesteryear when we were crap, not to mention his previous vocal support of FC United

There was a Burnley fan from Rochdale complaining about the price of the matchday experience. He was adding £10 petrol, £10 for parking £10 for two pints and £5 for Pie and Peas.
Another fan came on and suggested that he found a street with free parking and ate his lunch before he left the house.
Shouldn't laugh but I haven't stopped.

I think it's interesting that City are criticised by supporters of (other) "big" clubs because we are supposed to be funded by a "sugar daddy". Rags are forever going on about "emty blue plastic seats" at the Etihad (which only they can see!), and we are often accused of needing the Sheikh because our match day revenue is so low in comparison to the rags and Gooners, and even the scousers. This is yet more proof of the real reasons. Charge very reasonable ticket prices (especially reasonable in comparison to any other kind of night out in Manchester) and, of course, income is reduced. The worst that can be said is that the tea isn't cheap!
