David Silva - 2018/19 Performances

Every player has bad games and yesterday was very bad by his high standards. What surprised me most was his lack of desire to do his defensive duties. I know he's played a lot of games this year and he's not getting any younger, but he number of times Kante found himself in 10 yards of space in our half was alarming. Silva was on that side of the midfield and needed to be working harder.

With KDB, Bernie and Gundogan all fit and Foden coming through, we can afford to give him a rest over the next few weeks and have him fully fit and re-energised for the run-in.

It's strange because it seems obvious that Silva would suffer from having to play so much in the first half of the season due to KDB being out. KDB comes back, Gundogan and Bernardo have hit their best form of their City careers, and Dave is still getting played every 3 days.

Played every three days, underperforming and then the manager taking 70-80mins to react. I must be missing something!

Anonymous. Worrying as he is usually so influential.
Think this is it for me.

I'm not watching and thinking crikey Silvas playing poorly. I'm just not noticing his influence whereas usually he is involved in every aspect of our play.

Be interesting to see what our midfield looks like without Fernandinho given the form of Silva and KdB .
Personally feel Sane/Sterling on the wings and Gundogan/Bernardo in the middle should be nailed on.

Yesterday (and it was the same for too much of other poor team performances like Shalke and Newcastle); David Silva and Kevin de Bruyne were far too far apart from each other and had absolutely no link up play together, i don't think they were part of the same move of possession together at any point in the game on the edge of the Chelsea [or Shalke or Newcastle] box (not counting counter attacks where it may have happened). There were times where we just seemed to be going wide ad infinitum and we'd have no players in the centre of midfield at all with de Bruyne wide on one side with Bernardo and Silva wide on the other with Raheem.

Either strange tactics by Pep or off-script play by them both. Both of their games suffer when they play too far apart from each other.

But even generally, David has been off form lately. Hopefully it's just a run of form and he'll get back to his best soon.

To me it's more how the opposition set up like Chelsea did yesterday. I believe Newcastle and Wolves early in the season did similar. They don't press high and let our CB's bring the ball up. When we cross the halfway line they press and close us down. The space gets restricted and Silva and De Bruyne can't even get the ball at times thus having poor games. When the balls were going to our wingers they forced us to play back to our CB's again and our CB's have a hard time breaking the lines to find the 2 8's when it was so congested in the middle. If you notice half way in the 1st half KDB actually dropped back and played like a deep lying playmaker with Walker pushing up and Bernardo tucking in. Kev did fire a few balls into the 2 Silvas and we caused a few problems, but not enough. Problem is to me Walker is ineffective overlapping. This is when a Dani Alves would help us break down teams that play in a low block. Hopefully Mendy when he comes back. His crossing ability can cause problems.
