Day Out In York

Going to York on Saturday for a day out with my mrs. Fancy the treasurers house which is handy because it's near the minster which I'll obviously want to check out. I did fancy the Jorvik viking thing but reading on tripadvisor that sounds a bit shit. I'm assuming the york dungeon is the same sort of thing as the london dungeon and will therefore be avoiding that. The york castle museum is high up on tripdavisor but sounds a bit crap IMO, although I do fancy cliffords tower which is nearby so I can get a good view of York

Anyone recommend anywhere that is worthwhile seeing in the day, or any other tips?

Will be going for a meal (probs in lime house) then evening beers. Will want to do the house of trembling madness for a couple but have any of you got any other good recommendations for drinking? Will probably give the stone roses bar a whirl (has to be done)

york is a top place, lived here for nearly 4 years before moving to leeds in the summer. currently working in my office overlooking the train station, lovely sunset view!

the ghost walks are good fun, you'll see plenty of them advertised around the city, usually 90 mins or so in the early evenings. try out the chocolate story (not particularly cheap mind) the railway museum and going up the minster (if it's a nice day) for other things to do. Jorvik is a bit shit (and smells a bit shit), the dungeons are the same concept as those in london and not as good so avoid!

top place for food and drink IMO is evil eye, thai cuisine, different and reasonably priced. favourite old haunts were 1331, bobo lobo, kennedys, fibbers for bars / clubs. Top pubs are the golden fleece, hole in the wall (near the minster) but there's lots to choose from and plenty i've not frequented

Agree about the railway museum, worth a visit. York's a great place, some nice restaurants near the minster.

That sounds like the King's near to Bridge St. Cheap real Ales worth a visit I agree (if it's dried out by now)

Slug and Lettuce is near to it, plus the Stone Roses bar.

Is the King's Arms the one with the markers on the wall showing where the water has flooded up to?
Last couple of times we've been to York we've eaten in this Argentinian steak house called el gaucho which is fantastic.

stayed in York a year ago,visited the Viking place you mentioned,worth a visit,i did get stung driving into and out of York to the tune of £60 each way apparently some bridge is closed to cars at certain times of the day,as I was following my satnav I didn't notice names of bridges or even saw the sign saying it was closed to car ,approx. 1800 people aday get trapped by it so they can fuck off if they think im ever going to York again which is a shame because it is a nice place to visit but just felt ripped off.

Depends how you feel about trains, but the NRM always gives me the Roy Croppers. A top, top museum.

Not been in El Gaucho though, sounds good, especially if it's up to the same standard as the Manchester one.

That was deemed to be illegal and you can claim it back.

Railway museum is good (and free). If you're after a good view of the City I'd pay the extra to climb the tower in the Minster rather than Cliffords tower.

Other than pubs already mentioned Pivni, The Duke of York and The Hop are worth a look.

I looked into that and they gave refunds for certain dates sadly I fell outside the dates ,however ill never go to York again because I felt ripped off

You can get your money back! The council stopped that when they realised it was illegal!

The Stone Roses bar is a bit of a strange one. We went in on a Sunday just before Christmas and I was surprised how busy it was without being completely hammered. We got chatting to a barman from Chadderton, who ended up giving us a couple of bottles on the house. He did say it gets rammed out on a Friday and Saturday.

Played some decent music and there was plenty of good memorabillia (not exclusively Roses) on the walls. Drinks are cheap enough and it stays open until 2am. If you go not expecting too much, you'll probably have a good time in there.

35 years ago my favourite place to drink was the Cross Keys on Goodramgate. The Anglers opposite survived a bit longer, but I'm pretty sure the legendary and microscopic Blue Bell on Fossgate has gone by now. Some tremendous drinking bars in that town in those days, more than one for every day of the year, they say.
