i just don't see De jong as this great midfielder everyone sees him as. i think he would be great if he would fire some shots towards goal and join the attack once in a while..when he has the ball people give him 15 feet space knowing he will just pass..i know his job is stop the attack/win the ball/shield the back 4. but we wont get far if it stays like that. its like playing with a less man on the attack. in training maybe he should be doing dribbling/long range shots. i hope he can add another dimension to his game

our whole team IMO needs to shoot more look at the rags, proof that good things happen when u shoot. own goals are there second leading scorer, i think that's more than ade too

When I saw the first few games, I thought he reminded me of the style of play of one Norbert Stiles (spits on ground) but Nobby did a lot more than bring opposition attacks to a halt. Nige has to grow into a more all-round player and add a bit more to the attack. He has scored at least once for Holland so I still expect to see a Zab-type goal before the end of the season. Come on Nige. Shoot!

De Jong is fantastic at what he does. If he's played as a holding midfielder and is told to just sit and break up play then there's no-one better.

However, in Mancini's ridiculous 4-3-2-1 formation you need all 3 of the central midfielders to have more to their game. You need players who can spread the play, break forward, shoot and tackle.

If De Jong is played in the correct position he's perfect but he's not a traditional central midfielder.

My thoughts, also.

There's nothing that makes me feel more disgusted than ill educated opinions on De Jong, and that's what I have to put up with upon reading your vile comments. De Jong is a DM, pure and simple, his job is to win the ball and recycle possession and that's exactly what he does and he does it better than almost every DM on the planet. For us, he plays as a DM and if you have any questions about our lack of creativity I suggest you look towards the two CM players who have more of a responsiblity to create.

There is nothing more sickening than a DM who spends half his life in the opponents half resulting in him being out of position and not actually doing his job (see Alex Song for a perfect example.). It sounds like the lunatic that created this topic would rather our DM was like Song and offered something going forward as opposed to actually doing his job. In fact, I'd put money on this lad being a fan of Song and totally disregarding the masters of the role such as Mascherano and De Jong.

I don't remember Claude Makalele getting too much criticism from Chelsea fans for not contributing more to their attacks. It wasn't his role in the team. Get in the opposition's faces, break up their attacks, win the ball and then give it to someone with a bit more skill and flair to create.

Be interesting to see how he copes with Gerard at the weekend.

'Speshly with Gerrard's inner ear troubles.

He is going to see a lot of Gerrard. I am sure he will be played in his forward role again. Break his legs for all I care.
