Is this guy any good?

He looked pretty much off the pace to me and a lot of the game seemed to pass him by. I also got the impression that he's not that comfortable in posession.

Maybe needs a few games?

i can see why you think this mammutly, but he isnt there to do anything spectacular. this may be be why he doesnt stand out from the crowd so much. he is extremely disciplined and holds his position well. if you watch him he rarely leaves the centre circle. compare this to gelson who tears around the pitch like a blue arsed fly and you may see what i mean. he does what it says on the tin if you like.

A real unsung hero, does nothing eye catching but doesn't put a foot wrong. Retains possession and uses the ball well, breaks up the opposition attacks and does all the nitty gritty stuff. Very much in the makelele mould.

Excellent signing!
great signing, i see him as a young bosvelt. unsung hero that no team can do without.

He's shit. Get rid. While your at it sack Hughes, and that little lazy shit Bellamy. Given is shit, bring back Hart. Kompany is a joke at centre back and we've let TBH go out on loan! Shit City.

In all seriousness, De Jong played very well today I thought!? Looks a lot more composed and comfortable on the ball every game. If anyone read the programme notes, he pretty much sums up why him and similar players never get praised. He did a good job today.

Looked no more than average today. Doesn't look like 18M worth of talent but he is lacking in match fitness a great deal so I won't be judging him just yet. Scary thing that he isn't even 100% and is able to look average, wonder what he will do in about 3-4 games time. We'll see....

Well, I hope he will get better. Not saying he was bad, but looked like he was patrolling his own little six yard box. He didn't make mistakes but he didn't get very involved either.

in essence, that is what he is being asked to do. nothing more, nothing less

Didi does that too but, when he plays well, has a lot more overall influence on the game.

Just that for the money, you expect something a bit special. That's not his fault though and I'm not criticising the lad. Just hope there is more to come from him.

Actually I was thinking the same thing as the original poster. But then I gave it some thought as to what his role is and when I looked at the game in that way...he did an excellent job.

We maintained ball possession throughout the game and limited their attacks to "counter attacks". He doesn't necessarily join in the attack, but whenever we lost the ball, he was the first one running like hell to get it back for us.

We also have to keep in mind that before playing for Man City, his last game was last year in Oct/Nov! So it will take a little while before he is up to full speed. However, even at the "unfit" level he is at the moment, he still is considered a class player - hence his selection to the Holland team for their next game. No bad for a guy who hasn't played for months, and who in my opinion, has been great for City.

PS. I still would like to see Zab at RB and Elano in midfield (Richards being the odd man out)

I see the need for a Bosvelt and I am hoping Nige is the man. He hasn't set the place on fire yet but my expectations might be a little ahead of the game. I suspect that by the end of the season he has turned into the new Makalele or that Makalele in his prime reminds people of Nige. There are times when the game seems to be passing him by but then in comes a time interception or an immediate injection of class which kick-starts another attack. A good buy in the making.

he maintained the possession, helped the back four (headers and clearances) and made some quality passes. I thought he looked a little off the pace, but he also had not played in three month. All in all I thought he played well today, considering he is regaining match fitness.
