At £15 million and fifa fair play, we can't think like that. Vieira was an excellent player. It's a shame his physique let him down. If we can get a player anywhere near as good as him in his prime, we're in.
The defensive mid needs.
-aerial prowess
- good passing ability
- defensively immaculate
- stamina and decent speed.
I don't think de rossi can offer that.

It wasn't his physique that let him down!!! It was the fact that he was too old.

You need some speed to drive forward but it can be spread across the midfield. They really don't need to be quick to close down, it's all about reading the game and imposing yourself. Aerial ability is nice but certainly not essential.
De Rossi was once a supreme warrior, not because he had any physical prowess, but he had more fight in him than the rest of them put together. He was a natural leader but also a natural tactician who could take charge of a game. He had vision, passed with range and accuracy, and could score the sort of goal that would set the stadium on fire. Fuck your checklists, he was the bollocks, comfortable in any position, any situation, at any time.
The only worry is that the fire has gone out and no-one knows if it can be relit.

I said decent speed......
Besides, Y. Toure and Ramires have a penchant for taking advantage of such an ideology. NDJ broke down attacks against the stoke premier league game (after fa cup final) easily because they were far too lethargic. GazBaz got lambasted in the world cup because of this....

Barry was a bit unlucky at the world cup, he was supposedly injured, and I always felt that the set up when England threw the CB's into the box was precarious. The team was disorganised and panicking, pretty much coming apart at the seams.
Even so, I would have preferred De Rossi in that situation because he is the kind of guy who takes it upon himself to forcibly actively organise his area of the pitch. He's also very no-nonsense and would take a card in that situation rather than risk a counter. If Barry is strictly 'passive' (i.e. takes his lead from others and reacts to situations), De Rossi a couple of years ago was off the scale in the other direction, setting the tone, making the decisions and enforcing the discipline. At his peak he would have been beyond perfect. Now it would be a bit of a gamble, but I'd understand it totally.
