I reckon the plan was that we’d be banned from Europe and we’d need to sell Sane to cover the loss in revenue.

We through a spanner in the works by going straight to the CAS before they could hang us.
 
No stopping there since Branson and they still only stop at Stockport because of a clause in an 1840 Act of Parliament (which now can't be found)

It's a bit of an urban myth is that. Station calls are based on the Department for Transport's specification known as the "Service Level Commitment" which forms parts of the franchise agreement for each operator. This can be flexed based on the ability for Network Rail to path all services. For example, at least one Stoke to Manchester Northern service misses Stockport due to schedule clashes with freight services, and the 1940 Euston - Manchester also doesn't stop there.
