I don't agree, if Pep creates an "you want to be here, you get to play" mentality then I don't see too much of an issue. I don't see why we should help his national team aspirations when he's not willing to commit to the club. If he wants to leave fine, let him put pressure on Bayern to pay up knowing he'll be going into a Euros year not playing a single minute. I don't see why he should get a free ride at our expense.
I think we are holding all the cards here. Assuming Sane is fit and good enough to get in the team then surely we can use him. He could be great impact sub for example. I think we should be pragmatic. Tevez was brilliant for City but could hardly be described as the world's most loyal player. If we are paying his wages I have no problem using Sane. It's up to Bayern.

The only cards we are holding are jokers. Sadly, we have no power here

We can keep him for the last 12 months or sell him. That's still quite a lot of power. Sane has 12 months left on his contract and wants to leave. That's life. I honestly don't think Pep will give it a second thought . Pep is pragamatic. If he needs Sane on the field at any stage over the next year he will play him.
It would be bloody funny if we kept him and he scored a few goals in the CL next season which impacted on Bayern. I don't think Pep will get into mind games with Bayern over it. He will do what is right for the team. If Sane starts disrupting things then he will obviously not stay in the squad but I wouldn't be surprised if he plays tonight.

It's only power if you want to cut your nose to spite your face

I still think the best option is to sell him for £50m but if Bayern won't pay up then make them wait and we can use the asset we still have. It's a choice for Bayern. Sane can't afford not to play next season after 12 months out with injury. Two years out of football could destroy his career. It's up to Bayern. They must put up or shut up.

Purely in a business sense I think it's hard to argue that we would have £40m of value out of him over the next year. The equation is:

His performances in 20/21
vs
£40m and the value that could bring in terms of recruitment.

Agree about selling but Bayern are in the driving seat wrt what they offer and what we are likely to accept. I think the club will look at all angles and accept an offer which fans will think is a lot less than they would have hoped

Hindsight and all that, Looks like we should've agreed and taken the higher fee when they first put in a bid. Not sure what that was but it was probably a lot more than 40M. I remember us fans saying no less than 100M. How times have changed.

I'd snap hand off for £40m right now - that would be decent business in light of his contract option and the current pandemic/market correction.

Or to put it another way, £40m towards a top-class central defender who could cost north of £70m, certainly with each seller knowing how important that position is for us to fill.

It would still represent our record sale.

He doesn't want to join any other club, so our leverage isn't there.

By the same premise, Bayern pay us £40m and Leroy has repeated knee problems for the rest of his career - that's the risk all clubs take.

He would have left last summer for £110m but we gambled and lost. Any other injury barring an Achilles, would have seen it still go through.

Any names mentioned to replace him? Other than interest in Sancho? Or any clue who we want at CB?
