I disagree profoundly with your first sentence. Morals arise from within. If some guy in a robe says something is a sin because god says so, that is control and should never be the basis of laws.Control is just a prejudicial way of describing a set of moral values and laws based upon them. Society functions only with them accepted and in place. It may be we'll never penetrate the religious tenets followed by microbes and bacteria though.
We had laws against male homosexual activity for 100 years. That was not moral, it was just the view of a powerful church and caused millions of people extreme unhappiness. We put people in jail, FFS.
