Dear Atheists..

Tricky.

The 'son of god' claimed his mum was a virgin.

To my knowledge, Charles Darwin, didn't think parthenogenesis was viable as an explanation of mammalian evolution.

If I wasn't an atheist I'd pray for guidance.
I give in, anyone who can use the word parthsomething or other is a better man than me, besides, I was only pissing about. :-)

I'm relieved. Thought you were being serious for a while there :-)
No, I believe in science but sometimes, when this place gets depressing, Huw Edward's, (Blue on Blue) the stabbings (so sad) and that poor bloke who got banned from the joke thread, what was his name again?, I just need to have a bit of fun.

Control is just a prejudicial way of describing a set of moral values and laws based upon them. Society functions only with them accepted and in place. It may be we'll never penetrate the religious tenets followed by microbes and bacteria though.
I disagree profoundly with your first sentence. Morals arise from within. If some guy in a robe says something is a sin because god says so, that is control and should never be the basis of laws.
We had laws against male homosexual activity for 100 years. That was not moral, it was just the view of a powerful church and caused millions of people extreme unhappiness. We put people in jail, FFS.

The Earth is around 4,500,000,000 years old or 1,642,500,000,000 days old. But yes of course we should believe a book written 2000 years ago (by people who knew no better let's face it) which says that god created it all in 7.

Carbon dating alone proves that god does not exist, or at least that story is bollocks anyway.

Why did he also bother to create a trillion other galaxies, stars and planets with absolutely nothing on them in the meantime?
It must have been similar to us buying one of those shitty pack wardrobes when you always have stuff left over. Last week I built one and had a complete Roman aquaduct left. Same deal with god.

“There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn’t true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true.” – Soren Kierkegaard

I guess you pay your money and take your chances.

Historically, religious doctrine both shapes and reflects social attitudes and in practice often simply adds authority to the majority view as reflected in law. In our secular culture the revelatory source of our legal system is often not understood and the imprinting of Judaeo Christian values goes similarly unrecognised. Interesting article on the subject linked below in case it is of interest, although clearly not appropriate for this context.
