'Dear Mr Sexton...Sign Nijinsky'

48 Caps then was a very respectable return in those days, he was our best player on the England Summer Tour in 69. He got a fair bit of laying time in the 70 World Cup.

Charlton still got named in the Team of the 70 Tournament, and he was the natural replacement and Understudy to him at that time. We played 4-4-2, he was never going to replace Ball or Peters, and cant really argue with that. The only other position was replacing Mullery, who was holding mid-fielder.

If anywhere he should have been played up front alongside Franny or in the hole, where that incredible pace and stamina would have left him as the only player not to suffer in that incredible heat. With hindsight wonderful thing replacing a fading Geoff Hurst who was a sentimental pick, may have won us that World Cup, he could have picked up the ball off of that Mid-Field and run riot.

48 Caps a poor return, Man Utd Bias? Ramsey, Revie, Greenwood were no mugs, Revie built his team round him ahead of some marvellous English mid-fielders and not forgetting Uncle Joe who was caretaker manager, all had him as a first pick. Bell was picked ahead of Currie, Hudson, Brooking to name 3 consistently whilst playing for a City team way past it's peak. The mid-field of Ball, Bell and Francis had everything, and was the best I ever saw in the 3 Lions shirt. Gascoigne and Platt are remembered because of a semi-final, but they were over-run and as much as I enjoyed that Tournament, Robson rest his soul, was no tactical genius, but fucking lucky.

No there was no bias, just an appalling injury, he would have played at least until the 82 World Cup, been Captain and won well over 100 caps and may well have won us a Tournament, the reason we failed to qualify in 76 and 78 was due to him being injured.

That era was instead eclipised by Kevin Keegan, had he not been injured Bell would have had at least one of those European Footballer of the year awards..

Taking off my Blue Moon specs, Bell Charlton Gascoigne Robson in that Order were the best I saw.

Yep he was THAT Fucking good

Been said to many times Colin was just class and fair play to the majority of fans from that era tend to agree as well.

Great little read that. I noticed on the new Programme booths that on the back they had a little piece about us signing Colon Bell.

Colin Bell rarely gets mentioned in the same light as Best or Charlton (as examples) but it's amazing how rated he was by fans of other teams. I've spoken to Everton, Liverpool, Leeds and Spurs fans who all watched football in the 1960's & 70's and to a man they rave about Colin Bell.

The pro-Rag anti-everyone else AGENDA was alive and kicking from the day MANUre buggered off out of Manchester!

Met Colin going into The Etihad one match last season and said to him "Colin, I always thought that when you were in the team we couldn't lose!" "We lost too bloody many!" he said!

There is no doubt in my mind as a City fan since 1954 that Colin is the greatest player this club has ever had. He played on ploughed fields throughout his career but it never seemed to sap his enormous energy. People talk about conditions of yesteryear and how it would be applied today - Colin would have revelled in todays conditions. If he had not been cut down in his prime ( by you know who! ) he would definitely gone on to at least 120 caps.
If you think of Steven Gerrard and how good he was five years ago - multiply it by five and you have an idea how good Colin was!

Simply the best player I ever saw in sky blue, he did have everything.
I remember big Mal raving about the things he used to do in training and saying if by nature he was an extrovert he would be the greatest player in the world.

That's how good our king was.

I was to young to see him play but he was the first football player I new the name of due to a pair of hand me down shorts I was given which had the name of Colin bell printed on the label inside. When I asked my dad who this bloke was he replied 'he was the greatest footballer he'd ever seen play. That was some statement from a man whose seen pele, puskas and cruyff amongst others. I have a vague memory of being bell in the playground the following day while everyone else was being Rummenigge, platini, zico, conti or anyone else who we'd seen on the Tele during the 1982 world cup.

-- Sun Jul 14, 2013 11:26 am --

I was to young to see him play but he was the first football player I new the name of due to a pair of hand me down shorts I was given which had the name of Colin bell printed on the label inside. I know it's a typo... but I think you need to edit that... considering Colin had a real scare with cancer of the colon recently
