Death

it's my dad's funeral tomorrow.

He was 91 and utterly mentally sharp, though his body just gradually let him down.

After a couple of years rattling on about how he was past his sell by date, he welcomed the end, in the end...

I hope it goes ok.

I tend find funerals for older people are decent affairs because they are a genuine celebration and no one thinks "If only...."

Funerals for younger people are a different matter.

Who the hell wouldn't be afraid of an inevitable, endless abyss of nothingness?

I watched a cat kill a mouse today. The mouse was tortured, thrown, stabbed, mauled, bitten for about five minutes.

It squeaked right until the cat bit off its head.

I ain't going out like that.

Not at all, I fear losing loved ones more than myself.

It's a weird feeling to know you won't always exist but once it happens you'll never know.

Nothingness awaits and it's neither bad nor good.

I dont fear death, I fear being like my Nan currently is - racked with dementia and not having a fuckin clue who anyone or anything is. To top it off shes blind as well bless her but the body i strong as an ox, she could go on like that for years :(

I'd be happy to get to 85 and call it a day in my sleep, get like my Nan and I've told the wife to force feed me pills until I'm done.

Presumably it would take a fucking big cat to do that to you.

I'm not scared of dying, just missing my family and my kids in the nothingness that follows my life.
That's the only thing that irks me.
I don't believe that there is an afterlife, per se, although I do believe my life's energy will be recycled by the planet, something I will not be consious of.
In short, I will be bio-degraded into the earths energy pool and used to create new life, Be it intelligent or otherwise.

(I'm guessing intelligent next time, as it seems this time I missed out)

I've just been to a funeral last week that was the celebration of a young life(16),she was an inspiration to everyone she met especially after being diagnosed with a brain tumour in March. She still lived and loved life to the full for as long as she could until the cancer took over. The funeral was a beautiful occasion where most people came out smiling, including me and my wife. Which is a strange thing to say as she was our daughter.
Going through hell now though.

I've read that some doctors state that as we get older (80's +) we become more accepting and even accommodating of death. (a family friend in her 90's is of this attitude)
Maybe it's the systematic shutdown of brain functions that allows the elderly to become passive about death, or possibly even the body itself prepares the mind for the inevitable for a "stress free" passing. I can't say I've ever known anyone having a full blown hysterical fit just before they popped their clogs.

I hope this is true. I always said I wouldn't want to be really old, outliving my nearest and dearest
