Debt Collection Baliffs - To ignore or to pay

So - long story short my wife took our kids to a playbarn and entered a digit wrong with reg number.

For the last 18 months we have had DCBL (Direct Collection Baliffs Ltd), sending letters every few weeks on behalf of UK Parking Control Limited. Letters getting more strongly worded and now saying they will be commencing legal action for the 160 quid.

So my advice was to just ignore and they will lose interest as not worth taking us to court, however it is entering squeaky bum time as obviously I don't want baliffs coming round or getting bad credit as we are looking to get a larger mortgage soon.

Basically should I pay or carry on ignoring? Thanks

I'd begrudgingly pay. You don't want a CCJ for the sake of £160. One of life's lessons. Get Mrs to take a photo of car reg and refer to it when entering details. It's a costly mistake but not as costly as the impact the debt will have on later financial applications.

Pay

These firms are bastards and won't except any reason for not putting in the right numbers. You can never talk in person to anyone they are just bullies

I paid the correct fee that the machine asked for but the machine had got it wrong. I knew it was wrong as it should have been another 2 quid. I read the notice to see how to correct this. I couldnt find out how to correct they mistake.
Got back from holiday to find a 100quid parking charge. I appeal and lost lol.

Now I always try to park on the road and avoid car parks.

This company have been on TV umpteen times, they are usually shown enforcing High Court writs , usually on people who can afford to pay the money they owe,but choose not to for whatever reason.
But unless there are extreme mitigating circumstances, they always get the money that is owed.
My own observations are that every time they contact you, whether by letter, phone or personal visit, they charge you for the privilege, and what starts off as a nominal fine ends up as a huge amount owing.
In one particular case, a £60 fine ended up as a £4,000 debt.
Make of that what you will, but you could end up owing a fortune, all for the sake of an initial small fine.

Should have appealed the fine in the first place but now I would just pay up

Don't pay it, there is no debt until they go to court, you need to wait for a 'letter before claim' at that point they may go to court, but until then there isnt a debt and they cant do anything.

If it did go to court they would only add the court fees on. Most dont go to court though.
