Decimalisation

Fifty years ago today, the UK's currency finally arrived in the 20th Century, when we changed over from Pounds, Shillings and Pence to a much simpler decimal system.

At 58, I reckon I am in the youngest age bracket that can remember the changeover.

For those, who don’t recall the time, we had weeks of a series of five-minute public information films to inform us of how the new currency would work.

The clips were introduced by this little ditty from The Scaffold, a group that included Mike McGear, Sir Paul McCartney's brother:

"One pound is 100 new pennies, one hundred new pence to the pound"
I remember that to music.

I remember chips going up from 6d (2.5p) to 3p.
Can't remember much else about it.

I was walking down the street the other day and this chap said to me: "D'you want some LSD?" I said: "No thanks mate, we've gone decimalised now. Pounds, shillings, pence - no use to me any more”.

Ted Chippington c.1982

I measure in the house in metres and centimetres, weigh food in Grammes but weigh myself in stones and pounds. I use mph in my car and road distances in miles.
