Dental problems

thanks for all the replies! got an appointment on friday so ill take it from there. shittin myself though, big phobia of dentists! oh well, it will stop me looking like a crackhead in years to come!

thanks again

I had MAJOR teeth problems about a month ago - I couldn't function through the pain, it was that bad!

All I did was keep pestering the NHS Direct. I'd been struck off from my dentist due to missing an appointment, but a few dentists will actually do emergency appointments for you - I got one organised through the NHS direct helpline. Eventually, I went to a health centre in Moss Side on a Saturday morning, and he solved the problem for me there and then, and it only cost me £16.50.

It's worth a try, the people at NHS direct were extremely helpful :)

What. The. Fuck does that say?

Ha ha I thought I was having a stroke when I read that !!

Take Paramol (not panadol) - they're the only over the counter pain killer that contains Dihydrocodeine Tartrate which specifically targets dental pain. Can be taken with ibrufen.

Wisdom teeth are bloody miserable things unless you have a gob like Wio ferdinand with space for them to grow properly. Evolution would have done better to put a nice hard bony case around testicles instead of making extra teeth.

You can take out an insurance policy through a company called Denplan which covers costs associated with checkups / hygienist and contributes towards all the other stuff (like £400 towards crowns etc)

I pay about £20 a month which if i all i do is go for a check up and see the hygienist twice a year is good value.

Stops those unexpected big costs coming in..........

I pay NI contributions towards a scheme called the NHS. It's meant to take the sting out of big dental bills and seems pretty good value - unless of course dentistry has been subject to "stealth privatisation" for 20 years.

I also pay contributions to the NHS however I live in a rural area and NHS dentists are rarer than a mancunian rag. providing I'm prepared to travel 47 miles to see one / sign up / wait months on the waiting list they seem good value. other than that I have to go private........ hence my insurance plan

That's exactly what I mean. No one has said NHS dentistry is going - it's just gradually become less available and therefore oversubscribed forcing most folk to go private to cope with emergencies or fit appointments around their lives. I don't claim to have any facts or figures but I do know that seeing an NHS dentist is a lot harder than it was 20-30 years ago. IMHO it will be GP's next, probably starting with out of hours services and priority appointments for fee payers creating a 2 tier system.
