Depeche Mode

New album is really good. Very melancholy. Would be a fitting way to end what has been a stunning career.

First impressions I would agree with that. Though it's clearly got that elegiac feeling the melancholy doesn't feel depressing. If this is it ,then on first listens it's not a bad way to sign off.

I always give their new stuff time before I share my thoughts and now I’ve given it a few days I’m glad I did. I remember SOFD (their best IMHO) landing and it took me a while to get after Violator and this one is the same. It‘s easily their best since Playing the Angel and it’s good to see they’ve gone back to what they do best (no politics or blues shit).

I had my doubts about this producer after the last two albums and like most DM veterans was hoping Alan Wilder and more in my case, Flood, would be brought back for what will probably be their last one. Anyway, you should never go back and thankfully the production has evolved to give us some belters like Never Let Me Go and People are Good.

I was worried about the concerts because there’s nothing worse than some old blokes trying to keep going when their time is up but they’ve still got it live from what I’ve seen so far. I’m going back to Mexico City where I saw them at their peak in front of the most obsessed and loudest fans. Be good to see them back in Manchester again when they announce the inevitable extra dates (can’t be arsed with Twickenham but going to Dublin) how good would if be if the Co-op Arena opened in time for them to grace it with an appearance by the way…

Finally got round to listening to MM. Found it surprisingly uplifting having expected it to be quite morbid. Love the minimalistic production & basic electronica and beats. And both Dave & Martin's vocals have aged like a vintage wine. Their best album since Violator in my opinion.
