The 'old firm' is really something else, there is a real atmosphere and tension around the city, definitely one of the best around if it's a key game. Possibly diluted by the fact they, until recently, play each other 5 or 6 times a year.

Would love to see boca v river, my girlfriend was in Argentina a few years back and actually went to la bombonera and said it was amazing and terrifying as the whole stadium shakes, I was so envious! Having seen be skits in a regular game and the atmosphere of an amazing crowd and stadium I would imagine an Istanbul derby could be something to behold

I knew you'd put this up and I have a ready made answer. If this thread were 33 years ago I might have said it's one of the world's most passionate derby, but now it isn't, it's 2013 and it's barely a cut above the better English derbies for atmosphere in the vast majority of games. I think I've seen one Old Firm derby in recent years where I've been impressed by the noise, and when they happen fucking six times a season, that's all you can expect.

Surely you're arguing which is the most poorly policed derby then. If there were no CCTV, less police and no banning orders, there would be carnage at the Old Firm derby. You're just recognising that the crackpots in Argentina, Greece and Turkey that pass for law enforcers don't do there jobs (at the football) as well as the British police.

Apart from ours which will grow tenfold now with important games we meet in.

Rangers vs Celtic, has the religious aspects thrown in there + both get over an ave of 40,000.

Milan and inter , has to be up there as its the divide of the city - ones a working mans team and others a bit upper class of support. Remember this from an documentary.

Roma vs lazio? Nah not really the only average about 30,000 each.

Schalke - Dortmund is an interesting one and one of the best West European derbies.

Rapid Wien - Austria Wien is another good one, same as Grasshoppers Zürich -ZSC Zürich.

Turkey, Greece, Argentinia, Poland etc. shit all over the derbies in western Europe though.
