Diabetes query

I was diagnosed earlier in the year with diabetes, I took myself for an NCD blood work up after suffering symptoms (I never realised at the time, just knew I wasn't anything close to right).

I had to stop driving around dusk as my eyesight was deteriorating, my normal reading prescription glasses were suddenly right for distance, but I could no longer read with them. I visited an optician but between getting a new prescription and collecting the new glasses my eyes had changed further making the new prescription useless. I then visited an Opthalmologist with no luck.

I was losing weight (23kg over a few months), and seemingly peeing every hour, on the hour in the night.

At the tests, my blood sugar level was way over 300. I was precribed a couple of textbook drugs which both made me ill, after a return to the hospital my meds were changed to Glipizide (which seems to work well for me). They started me off requiring three blood readings a day.I now hardly bother with my blood sugar test unless something is not feeling right, or I have done something completely different or new.

My doctor goes off the HbA1c test that I get every 3 months which is far more reliable. The other bloods are once a year.

Made changes to my diet, all my rice is now brown, and my noodles are whole grain, as is any bread etc. I always ate quite a lot of fruit anyway. The thing that made the most difference was walking, I go out for around an hour almost every morning.

So, any symptoms, get yourself checked.

I've been Type2 for over 10 years. My treatment plan was, a full Diabetic clinic every 6 months. To save money, the full check-up was revised to every 9 months, then changed again to every 12months (with just a HbA1c after 6)). Current plan is full clinic every 12 with a halfway blood test, but only if I request one.

I'm on various medications, which have changed in quantity and content over the years and, by and large, have stabilized the condition. However, sneaking up on the blind (no pun intended) side are vision impairment (retinopathy) and CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease), the latter may possibly be the consequence of some element of the diabetes medication. Neither are reversible.

Do not take Type2 Diabetes lightly.
