I assume you do realise that when you 'make the effort' of these one-word or one-line snide posts you understand how you make yourself look and just how you confirm to many posters your character?

There's actually a biography of Abbott in the pipeline authored by the Cambridge academic Robin Bunce.

I don't want to wade into this debate as I know next to nothing about her, though I am aware that the public perception of her isn't exactly positive.

I'm also not a Corbynista, just in case anyone was thinking that. He's too ideological for me.

But Bunce I can vouch for. Haven't met the bloke, though I have had some dealings with him. He's a decent guy, a very sharp thinker and also an author who writes with great clarity.

From what I can tell (on the basis of perusing the titles of his previous publications), when it emerges it is likely to be sympathetic to it's subject. Which might therefore put the cat among the pigeons.

It's not something I would read but I'll be watching out for the reviews.

I know political threads tend to stray into the absurd, but the last few pages are very disheartening and a sad example of how poor political discourse has become. People seem to be deliberately misunderstanding what has been said.

Not one person has said you cannot criticise women, nor has anyone said you can't criticise people due to their race, religious beliefs or if they are LGBTQ+.

I posted that these certain politicians receive a disproportionate amount of attention on this forum than their male and right leaning female peers. The only constructive response I've seen is that Swinson and Sturgeon are leaders of opposition parties. Other than that it's like a Daily Mail "You can't say anything these days" comments section, look at the post about Chukka Umanna above.

The response of just start a thread or revive old threads of other politicians misses the point.

Take this thread, as far as I'm aware Diane Abbott has done nothing remotely newsworthy recently, at least nothing that warrants her thread remaining on the first page of this forum. Yet we see posts constantly decrying her lack of intelligence. Now take Dominic Raab, who many people, either side of the political spectrum, would consider to be an imbecile, there are no constant posts in a thread on him reminding us all that people think he's stupid.

Is it just that we've all accepted Raab is incompetent and a moron and moved on?....Think I've just answered it there :-)

Abbott probably gets more shit than most and although some of it is motivated by race, gender and class (and therefore unwarranted), the vast majority of criticism and abuse she gets is absolutely deserved. There's no comparison with her and Raab and 99% of other MPs sitting in Parliament.

In fact, on this forum, I think she's done well to only have 34 pages on her. She's standing to be the Home Secretary in a few weeks so I think it's only right that a woman who once said 'a defeat for Britain is a victory for us all' is scrutinised a bit closer than most other candidates.

That's especially the case when she's planning to abolish stop and search in the midst of a knife crime crisis, and wants to increase immigration when the majority of the British public want to reduce it. Maybe she'll be right on both issues but a very brief glance at her past record on the IRA, white women working in the NHS, and voting against proscribing Al Qaeda months before they smashed 4 airliners into various American landmarks tell us she will almost certainly be wrong and with devastating consequences for this country.

If people believe the criticism is warranted then fair enough.

With your last paragraph, what she said about Stop and Search was “Evidence-based stop and search will always be an important weapon against all types of crime. But random stop and search has poisoned relationships between the police and the community, and in the end we need the cooperation of the community to deal with the issues" Then pointed to New York and former UK Capital of Knife Crime Glasgow on how to better deal with it.

Immigration is sadly a topic which is hard to have any decent discussion over as opinions are very emotive, on both sides. You could opine that Brexit was the biggest indication of people's thoughts on immigration and that would indicate a slim majority. That is for a different thread.

She's stated her thoughts on the IRA have changed over the past 34 years, I mean people do change their minds and opinions on the world over time. If her past opinions and stances on that still bother you then fair enough.

Your comment about white nurses refers to her quote on Finnish nurses? I don't know the context behind the quote but taken on it's own I'd agree it was a racist comment.

What's her vote against the bill proscribing Al Qaeda and other organisations like them got to do with anything? Dennis Skinner and Tony Benn all voted against the bill. It in no way supported Al Qaeda or any other terrorist organisations named.

When compared with the current Home Secretary these seem small fry.

Just seen this,my view is this thread is mostly sexist,i say that as someone who is very hard to offend, i don't think it's right to call women cunts either,i haven't read the other ones so can't comment,i don't think Abbott has done anything wrong to warrant such hatred,she is not in government so she isn't responsible for any of the shite the last 10yrs have given us,that's where the fingers should be pointing,it seems she is getting battered in here because she is a women and a labour mp

She’s said stuff that is absolutely thick, has said very controversial things about the country, has previously stereotyped the majority ethnicity in this country and is, and this is being fair, the epitome of what those on the right characterise as the loony left.

She’s done more damage to her cause than good.

It’s got nothing to do with her being a woman nor skin colour and everything to do with her being a dangerous Home Secretary, should they gain power.

I can’t believe I’m agreeing with him but BT is spot on on the above post, Thatcher had people celebrating her death and actually using sexist language against her.

I’ve heard many women on the left say she shouldn’t be a feminist role model, well who the fuck are they to decide?
