Did Darwin Kill God?

Well believe it or not since she's stopped being a nun she hasn't just completely forgotten about her faith (If you haven't met anyone like that then fair enough)

Dunno what convent it was, it was in africa

Not really sure what you are getting at with the point that she hasn't forgotten her faith.

However, there was something similar in my family. My Uncle seriously considered entering the Priesthood when he was young (he had been encouraged to do so by one of his Tutors at De La Salle College) but his Mother talked him out of it.
He went on to be a Tax Inspector and rarely discusses his Faith these days. ;-)[/quote]

Mackenzie.... you suck at quoting :P

another dodgy book i read a few years ago intimated that jesus was in fact black and came from ethiopia. maybe he did and maye didnt, only people with a screw loose would argue the toss over that one, i dont really care.

Hmmm, I had heard he was from Nigeria and, if you would just provide your credit card information, he could reserve you a place in Heaven. A good place in Heaven, though, not something you could by anywhere else. And, the offer was good for "only today, one day only!"

;+)

Yeah, could well be.

But evolution is a very gradual process, from ape to man possibly took around 5 million years, although the exact timescale isn't really known. In this snapshot of time that we're living in we're not going to notice that taking place. Besides, when the first apes began to leave the forests, there wasn't already 6 billion more highly evolved 'apes' competing with them.

Sorry again, BUT...

I'm assuming 5 Million years isn't in a set block! For example, if 60 seconds starts at 0, but I look at the clock at 8 secs, do I have to wait til it reaches 60 to start the minute again, or wait til it reaches 8 secs to still witness that minute?? In other words, we see evidence of continual growth and shifts all around us.

It sounds a bit gobbledegook, yes, but what I'm saying is, there's no stage that the Evolution process you talk of, should not be witnessed now. Therefore that 'missing link' has to be in evidence somewhere! There SHOULD be a VISIBLE link somewhere! There always IS! How can there be a 'jump'??

It's not a logical concept and why the Evolution analysis breaks down!

Gobbledygook could break down almost anything.

What I meant to say was(as my wife in my ear talking baby stuff again!) that Time is always moving. Saying that the Evolution from Ape to Man taking 5 Million years explains it as some kind of (here we go again) 'coincidence' or 'anomaly'!! Why is that?? After all, it's taken such a length of time to get to this point, it would amazing to think there's a cut off point!

Apes are still around, presumably 'evolving', so where are the in-betweeners' at this point in time??

("No Gailen', you got here late, so you have to wait your turn!"!!)

Or is that a 'Select' group were chosen and we have to wait another 5 Million years for the next lot...?

First of all "from man to ape" isn't exactly a fair way to phrase it because humans are apes, nothing more and nothing less. Along with chimps we evolved from another form of ape, but we're still apes.

I'm a bit confused about your argument...but I doubt we'll find a single missing link as it's such a gradual process, but different fossils are being found all the time making Evolution seem more and more likely to be true every day (even though it's been regarded as fact for ages). Of course we're not gonna find all the fossils to make a complete database of this - they just don't exist - but we've found more than enough to back up Evolution.

My daughter is training to be a primary school teacher and she has to teach the kids about god and the bible.
Lying to kids so young is just wrong.

Does she think she's lying? If so she's in the wrong job but if not perhaps you should show her a little more respect.

Yes she thinks she's lying. She has to teach what she is told to teach or she will be off the placement. It is a RC school.

Do you think i have no idea about my daughters beliefs and opinions??

Is it lying though? The Gospels are supported by History (even the Romans made reference to Jesus).

I had a very good Religious Education teacher at Secondary School (school was non denomination). She went through the Gospels with us over those 2 years (it was for my O Level) and discussed with us what had been written. Not once did she try and ram religion down our throats. She treated us as adults and allowed us to question what was written, and informed us of the history behind the gospels. It was fascinating, objective and informed.

I'd guess that it may be different at a RC school though.

My own stance on all of this now is that I think Jesus a wonderful charismatic man and can quite understand why his followers endured death for him. I once read something that said if you believe Jesus to have been correct in his teachings then you have to believe he was the Son of God. That is the bit that I don't agree with.

And I don't think "Darwin killed God" at all. There is room for both.

For some it's a lie. For others the truth. Each to their own, but these are primary school kids. If the parents want to bring them up religiously then fair enough. Using state education to effectively brainwash 6 year olds is plain wrong too me.

Your daughter should not be there and choose a non religious one.
