Did Hughes make a big mistake?

I don't think Hughes plays enough football manager otherwise he'd easily know who was good and who was available. I won't be happy until he signs van buyten. I mean honestly if he hasn't even got the decency to get on the blower to Moyes it is no wonder Lescott won't sign. Should have sacked off Adebayor and focused on getting Steven Taylor in. I don't think he even knows that it is an African nations cup year. Should stop picking welsh players, get his finger out and play 442. Petrov at leftback anyone?

The comments on here at times are remarkable. We've just signed half a new team for christ sake. They are going to need time to gel, we can't be expecting a solid TEAM performance for another few weeks yet. Unfortunetly it's looking like the season is going to start before we are ready but it's just something we'll have to deal with and hopefully make up for when the team finally gels and starts playing together.

What we clearly still need to work on is defending set bloody pieces!!! Do we actually do this? Because all season long we have conceeded from set pieces and it looked worrying again tonight, Marking was again atrocious.

That, my friend, is why a lot of us cannot understand why we aren't using pre-season matches to gel the likely starting XI together now!!! Why are we wasting this opportunity by playing players who are unlikely to be in the mix when the season kicks off!

He's geting alot of stick but Dunney and Ned would be a safer bet for the CB pairing than Toure plus someone else but we don't know who but we'll keep chopping and changing to see what might work best and hope that we sign Lescott but it looks flaky oh well....

Tonights game didn't matter in the big scheme of things. It was a friendly. Our first game that matters is against Blackburn and you won't see TBH brought on for Ireland then or Etuhu playing 90 minutes. If we do then maybe there will be cause to accuse Mark Hughes of making a big mistake but you can guarantee his tactics will be different when 3 points are at stake.

Good point but the starting 11 tonight was our current best 11 given who's fit, besides etuhu. Subs had to be made as they are not capable of lasting a whole game yet plus we have a game in just 3 days.

The problem is not that strikers were signed early, but that our lacking ability of getting defenders on board quick enough for some serious pre-season. Getting the defence to gel is absolutely crucial. Every single day of practice for our defenders before season starts is incredibly important and they are missing out.

We identified all of our transfer targets early on, but, as it turned out, it proved more complex to get the defenders in. Would you rather have binned the main targets already and gone further down our list for someone, by definition, considered less suitable by the manager purely for the sake of an early signing?

Unfortunately, we don't dictate how other clubs choose to do business. The way things have happened isn't ideal, but that's the way these things happen sometimes. You make it sound so simple in the post above, that all we have to do is click our fingers and two or three top quality defenders will come running. In the real world, identifying the right players and completing their signings can take time, but it's time worth investing and a better policy for the long term than desperately buying someone simply because you can do a deal quickly.
