Can I just say 'move closer to work then' before another moron does, there said it.

One good thing we did a while ago at work was agree to work longer hours per day so we only have to work 3 days a week to make up our hours. Makes a fairly big saving on fuel cost over a year.
If someone would like to give me what I paid for my house 5 years ago gladly, but as I work 10 mins from my house then it seems a bit daft and as my wife works for an airline and unless they build an airport in Oldham then I can't see that circumstance changing. I'm all for using public transport in fact we often got the train to Manc at £1.70 each return it was good value, but that has/will be replaced by the Metrolink but I don't think it will be that price somehow.

I know mate I was being sarcastic before some other buffoon said it without knowing how much it actually costs to move house these days.

Metrolink is £5.60 return to picc from radcliffe so is more expensive than doing the 18 mile round trip in a car even with the ridiculous cost of fuel.

I'm only a student but I have significantly reduced how much I use my car. In first year I would drive to uni and go home once a month or so.

Nowadays I'm walking everywhere and go home every 2-3 months. When I started driving I was paying 1.12 a litre and last time I (half) filled up I think it was 1.38 or something.

Doesn't sound like a lot but it's about 10% year on year which is a joke really considering most people's wages haven't gone up in a couple of years

A serious subject raised yet again yet the children (thought half term had ended) start with the pictures and silly comments, there really are some smart arses on here

just a few ideas on how to save a fortune on getting to work, i wasn't even trying to take the piss, my mates who all work a long way away save loads taking public transport and walking the difference.

you got any better ideas?

You tried getting public transport for a 5am start or a midnight finish? Not in this country mate....

why is it just in the UK people get ripped off....owner occupation falling as no bugger can afford to buy, rents are going up as not enough property on market due to a ferked housing policy, banks ripping you off with high interest and hidden costs at every turn, child care costs going through the roof, public transport, trains and buses a total rip off (a charge if you cross the county line due to deregulation WTF is the the matter with paying for the miles you do....and as for running a ferking car its not just the tax and price of diesel its the rip off car insurance people who put your bill up each year with some bullshite about uninsured drivers, accidents and security when the fact is the roads never safer, fewer accidents and cars more secure than ferking ever...total bullshite and when you threaten to find another insurer a miracle happens and they can match the quote and wont be putting your insurance up...bastards....and dont start me on bankers and how ferking young people in this country are having their futures sold out through years of successive governments in bed with bankers....student ferking loans.....and now these same politicians are bring in the bedroom tax for social housing tenants as they rake in profit from their own multiple houses (bought by ripping us the taxpayer off with their expenses and second home claims....ferkers!

you're on to something here. I'm going to get me a pack of dolies to pull the car around - just think of the fuel savings - AND we'll be getting the scroungers to put something back into society.

How much does a pack of six cost a week? - say with two spares just in case a couple are watching jeremy kyle and can't be arsed to get strapped in?

totally agree....the welfare system is out of control and genuine people who try and access it when they need help dont get it...but generations of families have made a career out of milking the welfare system....we have redefined what poverty means in the UK and need to address this balance but not at the expense of genuine vulnerable people..

I remember when the lifer of petrol hit the £1 a liter mark and there was a Public and media outcry and demonstrations etc.

At the time I knew this would just be a de sensitisation exercise together the people used to higher prices.
So what happened the price came down again and the politicians basked in the "glory" that they worked wonders for the people to get the Price down again.
So the demonstrations and outcry stopped.

Now, we have petrol over £1.35 a liter and apart from a few huffs and puffs here and there, nothing is done its just tolerated and now just accepted.

I am fortunate to work in a country where we can at least claim tax back from the mileage we do to and from work, so I get a good rebate every year as my roundtrip is a good 120 km's.

In the UK you get sweet FA as a normal worker, and I truly sympathise.
Do you work at Hannover airport or just live in Hannover?

Work there, in fact off to another night shift later.
I live about 55 km's away in Bergen near Celle.

Why do driver's spout constant BS about it "costing less to drive" than get a bus?? Let's say a weekly ticket on GM buses is 12 a week. Over the course of a year, that would cost £624. That's say the average persons car insurance alone.

Add repairs, MOT, fuel, and don't forget the cost of your car and it's finance agreement if you have one...

Driving a car makes most people soft and turns them into snobs.
