Differences between table tennis and ping pong.

In my ignorance I've always thought table tennis was the name of the game and Ping Pong, a trademark of a company who made the gear.

I've just been watching the world ping pong championship and one of the commentators has told me that there are huge differences in the two games.

To my untrained eye, apart from a gimmick where they nominate a point that counts double, I haven't actually spotted any differences yet.

Any ideas?

Ive noticed, people who say ping pong also say barm

No difference if your good what bat you have. A few years ago a guy who I knew (he died last year) and played for the British team took on a very good club player. He gave him a 19 point start and won 21-19 using a frying pan out of the night kitchen!!
What did he just knock him clean out with it forcing the other guy to retire

There is no difference. The official name is Table Tennis. Bat technology don't make 2 sports it just defines the internationally accepted standards. You can only play an official match with a sanctioned bat (paddle) but for fun you could use a sauce pan. It doesn't make it a different game.

TT Champion Chester Barnes in the 1960's once said if you were any good you could play with a book.

Naturally his sponsors Dunlop weren't too happy...:)
