So much better playing a single pivot. Allows you to close the opposition down higher up and when you win it back you've got more men forward. And you still have someone shielding the CBs

Much better for both possession and counter attacking.
The only downside is you don't get as much cover for the fullbacks unless your wide players work back a lot. Ours did that tonight most of the time.

Kolarov let too many crosses in but it was a brilliant away performance overall. Formations do matter
This. Been waiting so long in Europe since we signed Fernando to see this formation - pleased it was so effective as Pellegrini will no doubt be interested in using it again under certain scenarios.

Well done to Pellers for setting the team up for this match, am sure a lot of managers wouldn't have dropped KdB for this match but it was a tactical thing that worked wonders.

He's got an interesting new headfuck now: a new formation which doesn't really suit any of our best three attacking players. I think my head would spin off with that conundrum.

I think it suits them perfectly though. The players we have signed in DeBruyne & Sterling are two of the most scary fuckers in the world on counter attack. Just don't play all of them in the same team, all the time. Against good teams, play 3 in midfield but not necessarily Yaya.
Silva or DeBruyne or Nasri could possibly do it, if they had the legs around them.

Pellegrini has the knowledge to know which players we need, if he really decides to continue to use tactics rather than just saying 'spread out'. Delph could be a great asset too.

This kind of system is perfect for our squad imo. We can still play his favourite pkan here & thrre too.

I agree with that post, definitely, although it was perfect for that game rather than being perfect for us full stop. That type of system and performance relied on a team pushing onto us, it relied on bony holding it up, the wide men running at players and it was also the only system which layer to yaya's strengths. He played facing the goal but didn't have to make last ditch tackles or turn.

Silva or de Bruyne are good enough to slot into one - but not both - of the wide roles potentially, but Sergio can't hold it up like Bony. I see it as another string to our bow rather than the answer to everything.

What's really fucking brilliant, though, is that we can build performances like that on a solid back four with hart, vinny and otemendi holding it together. This team is evolving before our eyes and the squad strengthening by Txiki over the last couple of years is really paying dividends. This was a big, big night.

I honestly wouldn't swap our manager for any other boss in the world of football.

And that includes Guardiola, who is going to united anyway.
