Been caught checking my phone at work shortly before my break, the second time on four weeks.

It's in the code of conduct but everyone checks there's, just a shame I always seem to get caught.

I have a meeting Friday and believe I may get put on an informal warning, any suggestions as to how I should approach the meeting? Bearing in mind I believe the manager who caught me to have a bit of a problem with me and has seen to let her favourites get away with the same thing.

Make sure you have union representation or a colleague in with you.
I'd imagine all they would be able to do at the most is give you a verbal warning surely?

Tell them you had a personal problem at home, hence you having to check your phone at regular intervals.

Sorry you what? Checked your phone? And you're in trouble for that? Unless you are a bus driver or something that's just fucking stupid.

As someone else says say something like your dad were poorly and you thought you heard your phone beep and were just checking it....either that or just sit there texting thru the whole process.

Not many are gonna like this, but I work in telephony doing debt collection.

It was a few minutes before my break, I believe I can get an informal warning but with it being the manager I think has a problem making the decision it could be final written.

As part of my job I have to conduct meetings like this and can only suggest you hold your hands up, definitely do not state to your manager that other people do it and get away with because they are favourites if you really feel this is the case speak to your HR department or someone higher than her before the meeting.

Definitely have someone in the meeting with you and make sure minutes are taken and you receive a copy and sign it, your manager should sign it too.

You should of had a letter inviting you to the meeting stating the time date who it is with and what the meeting is about without this you can refuse to attend.

Finally if this is your first official meeting about this then your manager can only discuss the incident that led to the meeting, if she's only warned you verbally before and not documented it, then she can only act on this case.

Cheers very helpful, I've received the letter inviting me and it has been documented before.

I'll take your advice to not bring favouritism of other people and basically hold my hands up. The first time I checked my phone at 2 minutes to 8 with my shift finishing at 8. The phone was checked as I had 2 missed calls due to a family emergency. The manager in question took my phone off me and gave it my line manager, is this something that can be done?

Yes mate where I work they get asked to put it in there pocket, bag or locker and then if their caught again sent home we are not allowed to take anybody's property from them, you say it was a family emergency it would be helpful if you could prove that, was it a family emergency on the previous occasion and if so did you tell them and was it documented?

Yeah was explained to them last time itbwas an emergency, the company have a very hardline approach at most things. Its the taking the phone off me last time that's getting to me and hopefully something I can bring up.

I believe best case is an informal worst case, as getting caught second time in three weeks in final written, been with the company 2 years now and never had any real issues and an one of the highest collecters, although doubt that counts for much.

I had this when I worked in debt management, cos you have readily accessible "sensitive data".

I got gripped twice in a week. Just hold your hands up, admit it, apologise and don't get caught again.

I got a verbal warning, lasted 6 months.

Where is it you work?

^^this^^ Ill family member if you need to stretch it a bit

Are you serious ??, your advice is to lie that a family member is ill ?? that's disgraceful here's a better idea; Go to work do the job you are paid to do and obey the rules, go to the meeting apologise and then don't do it again, if someone at my place offered the ill family member excuse my reply would be "then you should have taken time off" and too many of them and it's bye bye, just some thoughts from the managers perspective.

You need to speak to your HR dept mate, where I work it goes verbal or if really bad misconduct then 1st written, but never ever final at this stage, it's called a "final"written as things precede it, off to bed now bud as been on nights

Good luck.
