Certainly something that they need to get on top of quickly as I remember crowds falling heavily in the 80’s when all this was going on.

We had the second highest number of arrests which surprised me.

Does feel from a purely observational/anecdotal perspective that things are getting a bit worse. Not sure how much lockdowns and the current socio-economic climate have played a part, but are probably factors. Still think it’s a long way from the late 80s/early 90s when I started going to football mind you.

Not that surprised by our number of arrests though. We have a pretty rum element to our support still, particularly away from home!

One arrest is one more than ideal. But an interesting figure in that article is there is on average 5.2 arrests per 100,000 fans.

I’m going to guess that is lower than just about any other occasion where large numbers of people ( especially mainly men ) gather in one place.

Yes according to that, 43% of our arrests were away from home which when you think only 6% of our fan base go to aways is a pretty high percentage. I suppose there are more police watching away fans though. Presumably this is only arrests at the ground too not in town centres and the like before and after.

Like you say it could be post Covid effect but they seem to suggest in the BBC article that it has continued into this season so be interesting to see if increases again or settles back down again. I doubt it will be the economic climate as the worrying age group they mention is unsurprisingly the 18-30 group, many of whom will probably still live at home.

Judging by the lack of action so far against fans chucking things, I think a lot of disorder won’t lead to arrests and much of it will be away from grounds so it’s hard to tell from these stats alone but interesting nonetheless (Especially for someone who enjoyed Sociology and is a bit of a stat geek like me :-) )

I guess there’s not that many other comparable occasions where you have similar crowds. Other sports are obviously one, but I imagine the arrest rates are far lower at cricket and rugby? Festivals are probably the other comparison, and I imagine the rate is possibly higher there due mainly to drug offences?

I think the opposite tbh. A lot of people that age now can’t afford to buy their own home, settle down etc so are probably feeling a bit disillusioned but have disposable income and need some escapism from everyday life (especially if still living at home). The chance to go on a bender every other weekend following your team over the country is pretty appealing.

76 arrests over an entire season is virtually nothing given the amount of games we play. It's way under 2 arrests a match. Hardly worrying as the BBC article states. Public disorder 19 arrests, so basically 1 arrest every 3 games for a public disorder offence. It's hardly the 80's and not something that really needs cracking down on.

True. You are probably right.

Yeah, I guess comparisons are pretty meaningless really. Lots of factors other than the actual behaviour will reflect the number of arrests. But I still think one arrest out of roughly every 20,000 fans would compare favourably to most events.

It always surprises me how it surprises people in our fanbase that we are almost always up in the top few sets of fans in the country for arrests.

I reckon we easily have one of the top few fanbases with the most nutcases in the country.

Good

Bored of queuing up to go in stadium surrounded by dickheads on coke
But you’re not bored of being surrounded by nice sound people on coke who you don’t even notice are on coke, are you?

Dickheads are dickheads and annoy everyone whether they’re on coke or not.

The dickheads are the problem, not the drugs.

It's only a matter of time before drink/drug testing is trialed at stadiums.

On what possible grounds could they refuse you entry to a football ground if you’d had a drink?

Do they still have that offer where if you get in the ground early enough they’ll sell you cheap beer?
