Dispatches/Sunday Times investigation: Russell Brand accused of rape and sexual assault

You’re right of course - I’m not even on the platform so I’m not sure even banning it would work, I just find it concerning that anyone can say anything without fear of repercussions, especially when it could be false.
Libel laws apply to the internet.

It's the inrernet, how do you police that without server bans like china, russia, america etc do.

Twitter will always be ful lof bullshit and false news, only way to stop it is to ban twitter in your country
It's an interesting debate for sure, one fraught with difficulty; but at this stage I'd happily see social media banned. It's a febrile arena for breeding hate and is the primary reason society, ironically enough, is now so divided. It's children who are most endangered with these platforms, and no child should have to endure online abuse so dickheads like Mike Graham and Piers Morgan can court public opinion for lucre and ego-stoking.

I use Twitter for City Xtra and major headline news, I'm ready to come off it because it's full of angst and bilious garbage disguised as healthy engagement. And I also use this site, that's about it. The likes of WhatsApp are more than good enough to stay connected in my opinion.

People being named all over twatter, how are they allowed to do it without any safeguards in place, how many times do they name innocent people - It’s a cesspit.
No hope of a ban. This needs to happen over and over again so people wise for themselves. We should be taxing these companies a lot more. They are not conducive to publich health and society's good function as a whole. They are as bad as smoking. It's just going to take a long time for people to realise that.

How do you police the Internet? Its American owned but probably dished out in Kazakhstan to a European audience. How can an English court/police control that ?
There are no real rules any more. You either ban everything like they do in China and be condemned by the world or you open the floodgates.

The Internet is a cesspit beyond policing.

Social media, say Twitter - you could charge £25 a year.
Have to verify your account with full ID proof etc

Would automatically reduce the fake accounts and bots massively and be much easier to police.

The actual best hope is that increasing numbers of people start to look down their noses at this stuff. It's not which side you are on. It's being involved at all. You and I have roughly zero idea what truly is what in our own lives, and of course drastically less insight into the reality of any of this stuff. That's reality, that's how it works, that's how it always has worked. There's no big moment where the world gets better, because we piled in on one of these big set-toos. We don't save anyone. We're just helping create a series of other problems.

paid social media isn't social it's a business, most would drip it ratger than pay for it.

Like if Ric ever made this a pay to view site would all here now be on it, tbh I wouldn't pay for this place

Fair enough, I’d pay for this considering how much I use it, would be better knowing everyone’s genuine and not got fake/trolling accounts.

Someone else would offer a free version that allowed all sorts of stuff to keep user numbers and interactions up so they can sell advertising and data. That is the business model behind the last 20 years. There's no chance of higher quality options catching on unless regulation is introduced that outlaws the cheapest and nastiest practises. And there is no chance of that unless the people demand it via the government. And the government won't do it, because the social media companies have the money and influence to make their job of staying in power and on top of public opinion practically impossible. And the people don't demand it because they just pile onto the next social media row and that feels like having their say.
