Ex-council house we own has an airing cupboard in the smallest bedroom above the stairs that looks as though it housed a boiler at one time. It's floor to ceiling but are these okay to knock down without a ceiling coming in? I'd take the bottom half out but ours is open and you can see diagonal panelling that I think is the slant from the ceiling above the stairs. Anyone else tackled this?

The closest image I could find was this:

Had similar when moved into our new flat in October, ours was floor to ceiling though and i cleared everything out and re done it as a wardrobe for my clobber, shes got all the bedroom wardrobe space now!

Doesn't look very 'ex council house' to me.

The pic isn't mine, but you should see our gaff. It's got wallpapered ceilings and decorative beams. Hideous. Cheap to buy though as it's 1930s

Have a look in the attic if its not baring any load you'll be fine. Obviously you'll have to patch the ceiling in.
Are you moving the rad as well?

Our rad isn't on the cupboard like the one shown

Ok but you do realise that the stairway runs into that cupboard with it (most probably) being a box room?
*edit * looks like you've already worked that out for yourself

As posted before check in the attic, you may have 1 wall that's a supporting wall. Is this actually built above the stairs? If so be careful when destroying it, particularly at the bottom. When you go up the stairs is there a sloping ceiling above the stairs to where the back of that room juts out? The bottom of the cupboard may be built on top of the 'box' that is put in above the stairs to allow this sloping ceiling. You may be able to reduce the size of this box or fit/ build a bed or wardrobe on it. If you can't remove it all because of this you may be wiser turning it into a wardrobe.

Ah yes, I see it does have the stairs running through it. Work out if you can fit the bed on top of it. Obviously you will need to build a bracket/ ledge to take the weight of the bed so that it is not resting on the sloping bit.
