If you remove the box and sloping bit, you can fit a pole through to downstairs. This would be handy if you want to pretend you are a fireman. Shout 'ner ner, ner ner' as you are sliding down for added realism.

get a couple of quotes from recommended builders. You could learn a lot and it costs nothing.
Alternatively ask a neighbour if they have had the same work.

definately go for the top half before you try the bottom...

If it`s ex council , and used to house a boiler , chances are it will be lined or shelved in asbestos !
