After the game yesterday, there was seemingly yet another game in which we committed half the number of fouls as our opponents and somehow came out with more yellow cards. So I decided to look into whether there was any truth to what a lot of blues think is self-evident.

And the answer seems to be that last season, no, but this season, yes.

Last season, an average of 15.73% of fouls were given a yellow. But contrary to what a lot of people think, we were only given a yellow for 13.41% of our fouls. Remember, this is nothing to do with the total number of fouls, just the percentage of fouls leading to a yellow card. Here's a full table (no prizes for guessing who got the least):

Fouls (Yellows) %
1 Burnley 360 (75) 20.83%
2 West Ham 331 (59) 17.82%
3 Watford 433 (77) 17.78%
4 Bournemouth 340 (60) 17.65%
5 Cardiff 374 (66) 17.65%
6 Wolverhampton Wanderers 409 (72) 17.60%
7 Arsenal 412 (72) 17.48%
8 Southampton 420 (71) 16.90%
9 Manchester United 433 (73) 16.86%
10 Leicester 351 (57) 16.24%
11 Fulham 423 (68) 16.08%
12 Crystal Palace 386 (58) 15.03%
13 Tottenham 376 (56) 14.89%
14 Chelsea 339 (49) 14.45%
15 Newcastle United 423 (57) 13.48%
16 Manchester City 328 (44) 13.41%
17 Huddersfield 420 (55) 13.1%
18 Brighton 463 (60) 12.96%
19 Everton 432 (55) 12.73%
20 Liverpool 315 (37) 11.75%

This season, referees have been giving more yellows per foul on average, up to 17%, but we've shot up the rankings to having more than 20% of our fouls penalised. Needless to say Liverpool have barely moved at a time when all but 5 clubs saw an increase in yellows.

1 Bournemouth 103 (24) 23.3%
2 Tottenham 120 (26) 21.67%
3 Chelsea 107 (23) 21.50%
4 Arsenal 126 (27) 21.43%
5 Watford 129 (27) 20.93%
6 Manchester City 117 (24) 20.51%
7 Manchester United 127 (26) 20.47%
8 Newcastle United 107 (20) 18.69%
9 Sheffield United 127 (22) 17.32%
10 Burnley 123 (21) 17.07%
11 West Ham 124 (21) 16.94%
12 Crystal Palace 148 (24) 16.22%
13 Wolverhampton Wanderers 146 (23) 15.75%
14 Norwich 118 (18) 15.25%
15 Aston Villa 134 (19) 14.18%
16 Everton 142 (20) 14.08%
17 Brighton 136 (18) 13.24%
18 Liverpool 112 (13) 11.61%
19 Southampton 130 (14) 10.77%
20 Leicester 133 (12) 9.02%

So basically we've had the biggest increase in yellow cards of any club in the league from last season to this despite largely playing in the same style.

Manchester City +7.10%
Chelsea +7.04%
Tottenham +6.77%
Bournemouth +5.65%
Newcastle United +5.22%
Arsenal +3.95%
Manchester United +3.61%
Watford +3.15%
Wolverhampton Wanderers +1.85%
Everton +1.35%
Crystal Palace +1.19%
Brighton +0.28%
Liverpool -0.14%
West Ham -0.89%
Burnley -3.76%
Southampton -6.14%
Leicester -7.22%

Just to be clear, this just looks at the number of fouls and the number of yellows, so will include yellows that might be unrelated to fouls such as time wasting or dissent.
