Do you agree with Pep that this season we are not very good in the boxes?

Yes, it was 2 shots on target from 18 shots, which indicates either the quality of chances we created was fairly poor or our finishing was woeful, I would say it was more the former due to poor team selection but that's subjective. Wolves is certainly more of an anomaly where we had a bad day whereas Spurs and Norwich would have been different outcomes if we'd just improved marginally at either end of the pitch. Wolves we could have had 100% shots on target conversion rate and we'd only have drawn, so clearly there were more fundamental issues that day.
I never really pay attention to shots on/off target.

We could have 16 shots on target that are extremely difficult chances, pea rollers ’keepers could throw their cap on or long rangers, but miss four sitters from four yards out, wide or over.

It’s the clear cut chances that are important, wherever they end up, that should be going in the net.

Crap at the back and too variable up front.
We consistantly averaged around 1 goal in 7 chances last season. This season it is variable between 1 in 3 (v Watford) and 0 in 18 (Wolves), 1 in 15 (Spurs), 1 in 13 (Norwich) the standard deviation is too high to not drop points.

To compare this season then...

So we have more shots, more on target, score more goals, have a better conversion rate and shots on target conversion rate. We also concede fewer shots, but concede more on target, concede fewer goals and the opposition has a worse conversion rate in both regards compared to Liverpool.

So why are we 6 points behind? Obvious really, we conceded 7 of those goals against Norwich, Wolves and Spurs and in those games our conversion rate was low, hence we dropped points. Liverpool have conceded more goals but only conceded more than once 3 times, twice in the CL (Napoli & Salzburg) and against Chelsea in the Super Cup, they don't do it in the league. This allows them to have lower conversion rates because they concede fewer league goals.

So in summary, we create more opportunities but Liverpool hit the target more often, however we are more clinical.
The opposition creates more chances against Liverpool, but we give away better opportunities because we concede more shots on target and a much higher proportion of our shots conceded are shots on target (49.5% vs 30.7% for Liverpool). So the difficulty for teams against Liverpool is hitting the target, when they do they actually take more chances than they do against us, which also tells us that Ederson is a much better keeper than certainly Adrian and in all honesty Alisson as well, but we knew that anyway.

So the above is interesting to see that actually the opposition aren't hopelessly different, but that broad overviews don't pick up the nuances of individual games (goalkeeping howlers, ref decisions) but most importantly, the key games where we fluff our lines and the opposition doesn't, costing us 8 points.
A lot to take in there but I agree with you (albeit you can't argue with official stats). Ederson is clearly better than Alisson in all departments.

To check in with today's.

Shots:
City - 25.
Villa - 11.

On Target:
City - 9
Villa - 5

SOT conversion rate:
City - 33.33%
Villa - 0%

So as evidenced by Jesus's misses, a slightly below par day in front of goal again, and another very good day for Ederson.

Ederson is having a lot of good days at the moment which is a bit of a worry because last season he was virtually redundant. Pep clearly not happy again with the first half which has happened a few times this season. Maybe it’s just hard to keep the relentless pressing up season after season.

we're not a settled side and it shows. The level we got to with everyone fit for a brief time is noticeably affected by just one player being out and it takes time to adjust. When you put a sticking plaster over the CB position, re-introduce Mendy, try to bed in Cancelo, stick Gundogan back deep, a leggy Kev, bring Bernie back in after he's spent plenty of time out of the side and put Jesus back in again then it's no wonder it's quite disjointed. We become so fine tuned and instinctive on top form when you even slightly take that away then we make it look like hard work quite quickly. The level you have to be on it at for Pep's game to work and pay off is so high it becomes quite disjointed if we're off it for whatever reason.

Today wasn't bad, even the first half, but it was a lot of promising positions but few good chances first half. The timing of runs, passes and movements just wasn't quite there. On top form we got into enough areas to be 3/4-0 up in the first half but today it was just a bit off and that's all it takes.

Nail on head here mate. Injuries are killing the season performance wise and we aren’t getting a settled team like the last two seasons.
