Do you think the club is proud enough about its history?

I'm 21 and obviously there has been no major trophies in the 15 or so years I've been going (or the previous 19 as we all no). My dad has made sure over the years with videos and stories about the glory days. My point is how are the club going about making sure the kids no about the history of this great football club. The stadium looks dull, we can't even have mcfc or something on the seats and it still hasn't touched me like Maine road use to. I personally would like to see the east stand made to the kippax(they'll never take the kippax) and maybe even bring back the old badge. Anyway let's sing our hearts out at the swamp and beat the bastards. Mcfc o.k

Great ideas. Dickov on his knees with his hands up is one of the most iconic sports images ever for me......although I just miiight be a bit biased. :)

Does anyone have a HI-RES version of that picture btw? Haven't been able to find any.

Trautmann etc would be great as well, ages before my time but also an iconic image of course.

Edit: nevermind. :)

Great idea. The picture of Dickov is fantastic, this really is the moment our club was saved. It should be up around the ground for all the see for ever.

I think the club should remind everybody about our history...

I find it really annoying when no mark clubs sing 'you've never won fcuk all' at us... Blackburn for one...

At United the players are apparently given books about the history of the club and so on upon signing. It'd be nice if that happened here so that the future players we sign realise we haven't just rolled off a production line.

I don't really fancy the flags idea (Not until we have some premier league titles etc) but I definetly think we need some statues around the ground of some great past City heroes. Have a public vote for an initial 6 or 8 or something and have them near the major entrances to the ground. Would look ace if you ask me :)

How about the Ring of Fame idea inside the Stadium???

Because then you may have kids look up and ask older people about those guys.

Yeh something like that as well would be fine. I just think at the current moment we need to focus on the great names and great people (Ie Helen & her bell, Annie Connell and plenty of others) that have made the club the great place it is. Its not success that has made the club overall what it is, its the players and people, the ups and downs that have made it special. We don't need to go over the top is what I'm trying to say.

The flags sound a brilliant idea. Like one or two others, I'm a bit iffy about celebrating the seven second division wins (a record number that, too, isn't it?) but hey, then again, why not? It's not as if we stole somebody else's team to win those trophies, is it?
Not so long ago, all we had to savour was our history. We should cherish it.

Maybe he meant mastiffs and should've used a capital P?

That f**ks me for multiculturist of the year, doesn't it?

I think if you brought it up with 'the powers that', I bet the response would be "we're looking to the future, not the past". Which unfortunately is the kind of response that spells the end of the heritage of our club. There's over 100 years of great history, great players, trophies, achievments etc. but the club never, ever refers to it. It's a shame.

What about banners on the lamposts around the stadium (Kippax Crescent is it called) having banners of all the great players, with a picture and their name.

Maybe the club is restricted by the fact that the ground is only rented, that would prevent any statues or monuments of success

This for me really pisses me off although ive only been told of the glory years by my dad + the videos etc on the old betamax top loader :-) .im 36 by the way but blue since i could talk ,not won a bean in all my years but hey still here ,but we did how ever win the league ,the cup winners cup, the fa cup, all in a short space of time with the likes of young, summerbee, bell, lee, this needs addressing because if we dont point it out " meaning city as a club " no f***er else will . And as for the chant " you`ve never won fcuk all " Its a double negative surely , you carnt never win nothing ?

LOL... not true though... If the premier was sponsored by 'fuck all'... then you could infact... never win 'fuck all'...

LOL cheers for that ..lets hope they dont change it then because singing weve won fuck all on the trot for the last 30 years does sound repetative lol " obviousley in thirty years time "

I'm a 36 year old blue who has seen us win nothing. couple of wembly finals and play off final. promotions and relegations, hope ,dispair we've seen it all. my dad keeps telling me our time will come but to be honest it doesn't matter. no matter what we will all keep going cos its in the blood. If the money does bring success then brilliant. But lets not forget the past, yes we had tough times but that has made us what we are today, proud and 100 times better than the followers of the rag shite. We probably celebrated more after Gillingham than them cnuts ever had. I for one wouldn't have it any other way.

The club were asked about improvements to CoMs at a forum some time ago, the reply was along the lines we are restricted as to what we can do. Anything that 'decorates' the stadium has to be removable as it is used as a venue for concerts etc.

Great thread and thanks for the positive comments about me. I agree with everything here.

The Club has an extremely proud and positive history and many highs that no other club can match. Obviously, we have not won as many trophies as certain clubs but as I (and others) have said we should use our history to ensure all recognise our stature.

It takes an awful lot of effort to convince the public, especially the non-football public in Manchester, that City deserves attention. Inevitably the media focus on you know who, so my view has always been that City need to work harder, smarter etc. than the others to ensure the attention came the Blues way.

At City I worked tirelessly trying to persuade organisations such as Marketing Manchester of the importance to Manchester of City. I had some success. For example, I managed to persuade the Manchester Sightseeing Bus to add the stadium to their tour route - this may seem like a silly point but this suddenly raises the stature of the Club to tourists. If it's on the tour route then it's clearly something Manchester is proud of; something that deserves looking at; and also doing this helped to attract new fans. Year after year I had to work hard to continue this (and lots of similar activities) but sadly since leaving I've heard we've now been dropped from the route. United are still there of course and so rather than develop and promote our Club we are now in a no man’s zone.

As far as celebrations; Dickov images; mosaics and so on. I am proud to say that the Hall Of Fame, Museum & Tour, Joe Mercer Mosaics and many other historic items used to promote the Club were backed by the owners when I first suggested/created them. There are many other areas though that did not get support - for example I suggested a Hollywood style series of paving stars surrounding the stadium highlighting the real stars in the Club's history (a new one would be unveiled every year when a significant landmark is reached); a 30th anniversary of winning the League Cup (2006) - rejected because it would 'remind everyone' that we'd not been successful for several years; similarly when I suggested a 40th anniversary celebration for winning the League... I could go on, but the point is that many other clubs do know how to respect their history and also use it to convince people that the club is important.

I am not working at City now but I have made it perfectly clear to Garry Cook and others at the Club that I want to help make City great again and want to ensure the Club's history is given the attention it deserves. I believe our new owners understand this, and if they would like me to provide material etc. then as I've stressed on several occasions to those at the Club I would be happy to do so.

Incidentally, Utd do give all new players material on their club and have had presentations from museum staff and from former players. They had whole lessons on Munich & Busby. I offered to do the same sort of thing at City on several occasions but the guy in charge of our press at the time felt it was unnecessary.

Just found this, you'd have thought with all the "no history"bullshit flying about we would have reacted as a club & started to show that we do indeed have an History & a rich one at that.

I'd just like to say that my post above was from around 11 months ago and since that time I have developed an extremely good relationship with various people in senior positions at the Club. I have helped them with various history related work and ideas, and I'm very pleased with the way the Club is moving forward.

It'd be inappropriate for me to say any more at this point but I do think the Club does appreciate its history more now than at any period since the move to the new stadium in 2003. I have been asked more questions about the Club's birth, roots and development than ever before.

It's clear the future is bright and that the Club is in very good hands.

I wish some people would learn/remember our history and stop calling for a manager's(specially one of mancini's track record and stature) every 5 mins.

We should have banners, paintings or pictures on the walls of the concourse, a couple of statues of great players dotted around the ground and have a vote on a monument to replace the B of the Bang.

Obviously if we expand COMS or move we can put it into effect on the new site.

Plus one of our away kits each season should have some historical reference.
