Do you think the Trafford centre will last 20 more years?

Online shopping will be the death of it & every other like it, its a generation thing, in 20yrs time kids won’t know any different than
pressing an app on their iphone to order something rather than leaving the house to shop for it, in fairness its already started

I know most hate the Trafford Centre but it was always so handy for me when I lived in Urmston. Lived right next to the bridge over the motorway that leads straight into the TC car park. From house to shops was a 5 min walk, if that. I can’t really knock it for that reason, we used it practically every single week either for shopping or leisure for years on end. It will die eventually though, of course it will.

I've had many happy trips to the TC over the years. It opened in 1998, a few weeks before my eldest daughter was born, so it has been great for many trips with the kids, especially as it's conveniently located for Walkden.

We always get there for 8.30 on a Saturday morning, have some breakfast or a coffee, get what you need to get done and, the golden rule is: get out of there by 11.00AM. If you do, it's a joy. Nice and quiet, the drive in and out is a breeze.

Over the 20-odd years, we've been two or three times on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon for one daft reason or another and it's a hellish experience.

I think the architecture is fantastic, especially the New Orleans section. Hope it makes enough money to carry on.

I don't understand anyone who would go to the Trafford Centre, the www has all the choices in the world from the comfort of your armchair, don't get me wrong I am made to go out of a sense of doing things together: ( but very rarely, I'm off for 2 weeks now, lady peacefrog wants us to go shopping, I suggested that place near blue planet the outlet place, she can go into the different shops I can wait outside, I will go into one or two shops, I know they had a fred Perry shop:)

Like many shopping centres, it’ll evolve into a food and drink / entertainment complex.

Look at King St in town. The high end retail units and closing one by one and being replaced with hospitality businesses.

I admire your optimism. Every chance it will just become a warmer indoor facility for the spice merchants of Piccadilly Gdns before being pulled down - a sort of 90's Belle Vue that has had its day.

I’ve set foot In the place once in 57 years…
I normally treat it the way folk do with Oberammergau - a pilgrimage once every eight years. And then it has to be a Tuesday! Last time I was in the bastards wouldn't let me wheel me Brommie through. It's only got two wheels, I said, that dustcart that guy is wheeling has got twelve! They let me chain it up with those little yellow 'n red kiddie carts!

Isn't it every 10 years DEB'e ? I was over there in 1980, they were just rehearsing for the play at the time. Failsworth is twinned with Landsberg, went over as a guest with the brass band. Beautiful part of the country. Landsberg Prison is where Hitler dictated Mein Kampf.

The big Malls (as we call them) in Australia are booming.
I went to the TC about 3 years ago, it didn't seem to have the range of shops. Mostly clothes and jewellers.
I got bored very quickly.

I went last Friday night and thought the same, we walked around a few shops and then went to Las Iguanas for tea. The food bit was crazy busy but the rest of the place was pretty dead.

They need to rethink a lot of it, turn some of the empty shops into some good restaurants, bars or even a market and that kind of thing.

It will last if it evolves. There's so much infrastructure around it now (new roads, trams, hotels).

You also have chill factor, they're building a new exhibition centre at the soccer dome, driving range, pubs, the waterpark they're building etc.

In 5 years time, it would be quite a nice place to spend a long weekend.

I think retail on the whole is dying though. We'll see more stores turn into activities, services and restaurants.

Been once midweek on the way to an AmDam play my lad was in.

Found it very meh, won't be going again. If we have the need for a shopping centre we drive upto Junction 32 near Pontefract, outside, open and as a clearance centre is much better value even with fuel costs.

It was great when I was younger. Great place to take a bird on the cheap for something to eat and drink. As I I've got older I've seen it for what it is. Apart from the cinema I just don't see the appeal of it. My daughter asks me to take her all the time and it's bet with a firm, your mother will take you. Why anybody would want to subject themselves to it when there are far more better options is beyond me. People treat it as a day out when in reality all it causes is stress and the possibility of some fuckwit hitting my car with their doors as the parking spaces are made for Minis.

Don't even get me started on the grooming gangs you can see on a nightly basis. Know a couple of girls who worked at one of the restaurants there and were hounded everytime they set foot in the place.

Flatten it.

We only went in once and found it to be overly pricey, vacuous and empty of vibe. Debenhams was nice enough and the cafe area with the fountain showed great promise. Anyway E-Commerce is a far better option and we're both looking forward to the imminant arrival of VR-Commerce where you get to wear an elmet.
