Played footy for the first time in a year or two yesterday and was shocked how shit I was. Despite loosing weight with the Covid my feet could not do what my brain was telling it and then I pulled my hamstring after about twenty minutes. Has anyone managed to still be able to play post 45?

I did until about the age of 50 but then packed it in. Most of my team mates were of a similar age and the league wasn't age restricted and getting the run around by teams full of 20 year olds eventually lost its appeal. Where I was living at that time has a very hot, humid climate, which also made it a struggle.

Tennis, fishing and golf are more my thing these days!

Yes, I'm 46 and I still play at a decent standard, mainly with people in their 20's and early 30's.

I stopped drinking alcohol & switched to a whole food plant based diet about 5 years ago and it's made a difference to my fitness & recovery levels. I used to get problems with my shins after playing football but I don't get any of that anymore. I started doing yoga about 5 or 6 years ago also and that helps too.

Play 5 a side every week in a league against 20 year olds and love it and also just started playing vets football as well. I’m 46 and for me it just helps keeping me fit but also love the buzz of being in and around a football team.

If you get a half decent level of fitness through running, gym etc, do some real hard cardio sessions then that’s half the battle when you get on the pitch. If you were a decent player when you were younger it will quickly come back.

I started playing 5 a side again when I was just into my 40's. I was pretty fit as I'd been gyming for a number of years
My footballing skills relatively returned but obviously I was quite a lot slower than I'd been at my peak
These five a side games were played mainly amongst former 11 a side team mates, with an occasional youngster thrown in to make up the numbers, so almost everyone was at the same pace and disadvantage
We wind the clock forward six years or so and every week someone was picking up an injury
One particular cold evening during my turn in goal, I pulled off a rather spectacular save but it didn't half hurt my hand.
It didn't really recover so a few weeks later I visited a&e had it x rayed and discovered I had a broken scafoid. I was put in plaster and told by Mrs DD that I really should retire before I fuck myself totally
Roll the clock forward again another 10 years and I joined a football group of over 35s, more for the social aspect
Again my fitness was really good as I am gym fit, but my footballing skills had severely deteriorated
It took quite a number of weeks to regain any real passing ability, but return they did
Then just before lockdown, at the ripe old age of 57, I suffered a heel injury which I still haven't truly recovered from, so that is the absolute end of me playing football
