Does anyone still have a video player ?

Couldn’t seem to pm you mate. I’ve found the tapes and they are all “mini digital video cassettes”. I’ll try and dig out the camcorder in the morning

Casting my memory back I seem to recall you could buy a VHS video that these smaller camcorder tapes then slotted in to and you could play as normal in your VHS machine.

I’ve got a dual VHS and DVD player in cupboard that lets you record tapes on to DVD. You must be able to pick these machines up on eBay for not too much money I’d have thought.
True but there are lots of different kinds of camcorder tapes so might be hard to find one of those even if they were ever made. Or an adapter.

If you’ve already got a camcorder for the tapes and a pc or laptop with the right inputs and disk space, a £10 video grabber is the best option.

Hi, just saw this post. I have an camcorder for mini DV tapes, a JVC GR D73EK, drop me a message if you need to borrow it.

Cheers pal. Do you know how to get the camcorder tape transferred onto a laptop?
Not completely sure, it has got a micro usb port on it so that might be able to do something, I'll have a look if I've got the old software CD for it. Also it's got an AV cable (the round pins yellow red white) with it, which I think I've connected into a VHS player years ago to copy across the video from it, so in theory could also connect the AV cables into a video capture card (?) for a laptop like some of the others have mentioned, and transfer the video that way. It's got an S-Video port on the camcorder as well forgot to mention so think there's a few options to getting the video of it

You need one of these or similar...

Nero Video Grabber | Digital Video Cassettes | VHS to USB | DVD to PC | Analog to Digital Capture Card | S-VHS | Hi8 | Super 8 | Windows 11/10 | MacOS https://amzn.eu/d/09Xxtj0M

And either use the free bundled software or use OBS Studio which is free. Advantage of OBS is you can tweak the encoding settings much more and it supports all the latest encoding formats, but it is a bit fiddly to set up.

So basically you can use that gadget to copy the tapes to a pc (it plugs into the pc like a pendrive/flashdrive) and if you want you can play around with the settings if you want it for the tapes to transfer across as high quality or low quality, a bit like long play (LP) and short play (SP) for the old VHS video tapes. Good news is that, we might not need to buy that, as I've found the old software CD for the camcorder and an old Windows XP netbook from 10 years ago, so will see if I can get it working to transfer something from a tape to the PC.

Just to update I've managed to get it working with my old laptop, copying across an old camcorder tape, so drop me a message when's best to help you transfer your tapes.
