Does anyone teach English abroad?

Did five years of it in Bangkok and now blame the ridiculously accommodating work hours for my rampant alcoholism ;-)

Been doing it for over 20 years though nowadays I am more involved with teacher training. If you want any info, feel free to PM me.
Aye, but the last Blue to visit you for advice broke their leg :-)

(though i feel that Bicardi and beer might have had something to do with that, no matter what Nij says lol)

In my defence he's been here at least half a dozen times and only broke his leg once. It was definitely an alcohol induced breakage ;-)

Hi bluetom, im looking into moving to japan for at least a year to do the same, any tips? Is it still possible to get accomodation paid for in japan as it is in korea. I know things will be different regarding the tsunami but if you can answer with the best of your knowledge from before that, that would be great thanks.

Hi

I don't know too much about Japan, only that its really expensive! I did once have an interview to teach in Japan, but i couldnt make the interview, was with the JET scheme www.jet-uk.org - I think a lot of people go through them although Im sure you could fish out a job on your own directly with a school.

I'm pretty sure it's the same deal, flights and accomodation paid for as standard. Not sure about anymore than that. Try Dave's ESL Cafe - thats the standard teaching abroad forum which Im sure will have loads of information about teaching in Japan. http://www.eslcafe.com/

I would recommend Korea though -its cheap to live, you don't need any teaching qualifications, and it's an awesome place to be - lots of beaches, mountains, cool cities - i work 2pm to 7pm just chatting to children. The incrredible amount of Rags is the only drawback.

Scotty like we said in Kiev last week, you will have to grasp the queen's language yourself before you think about teaching someone abroad !

From what I can gather it's very poorly paid though, is that the case in Korea too?

Also, in Thailand, haven't they just changed the rules so you have to have a degree to teach English now?
