The only dog I would recommend is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, they have everything you need, they are great with kids (ask any owner they can be very protective) can be very affectionate, can take as much exercise as you can manage, and they take no shit from other dogs (although it takes them a while to get wound up, the only trouble is it takes a while for them to calm down,

I would go for a bitch if I were you, as they tend to be a little calmer and less boisterous, I can walk mine off her lead along the street and she just trots along side me, I often see a women with a couple of little kids in a pushchair and the dog quite happily walking off the lead and just sits down outside the shops.

Boxers are nice dogs but they tend to be a bit mental and they slaver a lot!

I second this, Staffies are mint.

Just echoing Ducado....

Boxers can be quite clumsy, for me they can get too boisterous if they aren't exercised regularly, they are bigger than Staffie's as wel.

if you train the Staffie correctly there won't be any problems, I don't recommend a Bitch however, this is down to health problems.
I've bred Staffies, Raised a few myself and from experience Bitches tend to get more health problems thus costing more in Vet bills.
Also I don't find them relatively enjoyable when they are "on heat"

if you plan on breeding however then yea get a Bitch as you will make money on them.

Main advice on a Male Staffie - Tough Love!
Make them know everyone in the family is above them in the pecking order, everything from who gets food first to where they sleep... and integration with children, if you push their noses out of activities they will see your children as a threat = when they may bite.
This applies with most (if not all) dogs though.

They are Very Loyal, and if you feel threatened in any way they will pick up on your fear and react accordingly.

You could always get a jack russel... but they are annoying little bastards :D

Just want to point out there is a subtle difference between guard dog and watch dog. A watch dog will alert you whereas a guard dog will physically restrain/attack a burglar.

Which one are you after? I know you said guard dog but just wanted to clarify you meant that as a lot of people get them muddled.

I've seen several staffies go for other dogs. I know that's more to do with the owners but I've never seen a boxer like that. I also have mates who have had very friendly staffies don't get me wrong.

Freely admit boxers are more boisterous and you really need to have the time to tend to them but if you do then they will give your more back than any other breed. You will have to train them. That's just my opinion and experience.

Your advice about dominance goes for any dog, it's not cruel that's the way they live, in every pack there is a top dog, and the other members just accept it, submitting to the top dog is not shameful, it's just what dogs do (and other canines)

I have not had that many health problems with mine but she has been done, I would always recommend having a look at a dogs parents if you can (if it's a pedigree I would insist) training is key, they are intelligent creatures to get the best out of them they have to learn

Sometimes aggressive behaviour in dogs is mistaken for sexual frustration, they are so closely linked in Dogs its weird.

A randy male dog is more likely to start toy-fighting with another dog, which can lead to owners becoming fearful, then the dog reacts accordingly to the fearful owner by then biting.

I've Never seen a unfearful Dog attack.

I have a few old weightplates which I tied a rope around, I would throw down a hill and my Staffie would get beasted (lol) having to carry them back up... He's never interested in fighting as all his testosterone was killed doing HIIT :D

Get your self an English bull mate . Get a miniature one there the same size has a staffi, very soft but look hard as

Cheers guys a lot of good advice to answer a few question I can't move am trapped with negative equity, and a guard dog would prob be more preferred option
Staffis seem to be the preferred option here but my girl has had one in the past and want a Diff breed and the only thing that puts me off them are the dogs homes are full of them
Made me think there is something wrong with the breed? Although they seem to have every thing you would want in a dog.

I think you'll find the main reason(S) for this is because Staffies are probably the most popular breed....And Every Bad Dog has a Bad Owner
Unless some dogs go bad due to being attacked by other dogs.

I've seen perfectly fine Staffies being sent into Bleakholt (sanctuary near me) because the owner didn't know how to house train it.
Another gripe might be the dog wee's when it gets excited.

Having a dog will tie you down, many people don't realise the responsibility of owning a dog.
You have a family of your own so you will understand this, Dogs are just like Children... They depend on you.

I also advise not to get a puppy, Rehome one.... <a class="postlink" href="http://www.sbtrescue.co.uk/needing_homes.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.sbtrescue.co.uk/needing_homes.htm</a>

The reason the dogs home are full of them is because they get confiscated from bad owners or get dumped if they don't fight.

Just go and get a rescue dog. They all bloody bark no matter what breed they are and they need homes while they are overlooked by folk who want "pedigrees".

Bloody glad humans don't get chosen this way for adoption, jeez.
