my dad recently got a dobermann puppy.

ive been reading up a lot about them, maybe you should look into them, they tick the boxes youre looking for.

Agreed, they are good with kids and intimidating.

they become protective of their home and family. very intelligent

I would also advocate a doberman. 2 of my neighbours have them and they are both great guard dogs but also great family dogs as they have kids and the dogs are no bother at all. I have a labrador who is a big softie, but when the doorbell goes or someone walks down our drive, it has what we call a big dog bark that sounds like there's a monster in the house. Whenever we have a parcel delivery the courier is very cautious when the door opens cause they think they are gonna be mauled, and I just play along like I'm holding an army back at the front door. Like others have said, most dogs can sound mean, but if you want a great family dog that will protect the house, i'd go for a male labrador or a German Shepherd.

i've a black lab and he'd probably go for a cuddle or a lick with any intruders lol.

i'd say a doberman, i used to shit it when i went round my mates who had one but it was really nice.

or go full blown on the thieving cunts and get a bull mastiff lol!

How about an Akita, my sister has 3; been great with her kids.

The girlfriends brother has one of them brazilian filas, filo..eermm off to google....ok seems it's a Fila Brasileiro. Nice dog but it scares the crap out of me. Sit's there staring at you, too scared to move at first, got used to it now and it 'seems' to like me. Can't bring myself to trust it though!

Just buy a baseball bat and sleep on the sofa. Much cheaper and you wont have to clear up any shit

Recently got an Akita from a friend who just hasn't got the time to look after him and he's a big softy. The little 'un mithers him to death and lies on him, straddles him and he puts up with hours of storys and jibber jabber. He takes food off you as gentle as he possibly could and is such a lovely animal. He follows us around the house and is scared to death of missing something. When the kids are in bed he goes upstairs and checks on them, making sure they are all ok. If the door bell goes he'll run to the door and bark unless the kids get up to see who's there and then he'll stand next to them.

Then there was last week. Whilst he was being walked, a lab cross came bounding up towards him and the three girls who are 10, 7 and 3 - he went for it. I have no doubt at all that the poor thing meant no harm at all and was just being friendly but Yoshi wasn't taking any chances. He launched himself at it and dragged the g/f off her feet - he was on a lead whereas the other one wasn't. He was on his way to doing some serious damage to the other dog by the time the g/f got back on her feet and managed to restrain him.

The other dogs owners weren't happy and the usual it should be muzzled, it needs to be put down nonsense came out. They forget that they had ignored the 'keep your dog under control signs' and say that our dog was in the wrong. It really upset the girls seeing him behave like that but that's his instinct kicking in.

Having had my Husky attacked by an English Bull Terrier and the idiot that had let it off the lead completely unable to stop it trying to rip my leashed dogs throat out, I am not prepared to muzzle my dogs ever again. If I hadn't had a foot long maglite torch to twat the terrier on the head with I have no doubt it would have killed my dog. Had mine been muzzled and unable to fight back I don't think he would have survived the attack as he managed to get hold of the other dog and fend it off a while.

As far as Dobermans go - they are great. Had one twenty years ago and she was everyting you'd want from a protection/guard dog. Friendly with people you obviously knew , wary of cold callers etc. She would lie on the floor whilst the kids pulled her ears and stuck their fingers up her nose, but if the door bell went or someone knocked on the door or window, she'd jump up and stand in front of them and growl and bark until she was happy everything was safe. The only problem we found was that she didn't like being left on her own and the neighbours complained that she howled as soon as we went out and left her alone. She wasn't fooled by the tv or radio either ;-)

Do your research and when you have a few ideas post them and see what people have to say.

For me it'd be GSD, Akita or Doberman and no way on earth would I go for an English Bull Terrier - bad experience with my dog and a friend had jealousy problems when his grandson came to visit and the dog had to play second fiddle. To see a powerful dog like that growling at a one year old is just not something you'd want to even contemplate.

Google that Fila Brasileiro again and have a look at its traits - you're lucky not to have been ripped to bits!!

Boxer. Soft and potty but protective to the end. Full of personality as well. Need plenty of attention though.

Good dogs but i wouldn't recommend one for the first time owner.

Ant dog will put a burglar off but Alsatian/GSD will stop them in their tracks. Get one as young as possible and it will grow up to protect your kids with its life.
Easy to train as well.

Doberman
In truth though, I have a mongrel who is a fucking maniac. Soft as fuck with me and the kids, but if someone dares walk past the house he goes literally insane. I sometimes let him stay in the porch or the side garden and go mental so that potential burglars scoping the area think, 'fuck that'.
He wouldn't do anything if someone broke in, but its the deterrent factor he has which I like.

I have 2 boxers, like many have said they can be giddy as they love people and think anyone who comes round the house has come to see them...they are very intelligent and loving dogs and are great with kids...the male is very vocal if you like letting us know if anyone approaches the house and ensuring anyone approaching sees him but he his as soft as shit a bit like scooby doo...the female is less vocal but if push came to shove she is the one that would die for us and would protect the family...the other thing with dogs is a burglar will not touch a house as soon as they see a dog like a boxer they just would not like to take a chance so will move on to the next house...my brother has 2 English bull terriers he has neighbours who have been burgled numerous times his house never been touched.... Coincidence or what... I think not

I think like others have said most dogs are just deterrent..

My terrier will bark like fuck at anyone within 30 yards of the house.

Most burglars would just move to the next house which didnt have a dog..

A dog is the new alarm.

Any dog from the dogs home will look after you.
We got our lad from there over 15 years ago and he has been the best guard dog ever.
He is only a small lad but you would not like him to come at you in anger.

My patterdale terrier goes mental at anyone passing the house

She would certainly scare off any burglars. But in reality she will just sit down barking at them for a belly rub haha

The 4 legged type

Anyone suggest any good breeds I have Just been burgled for the 3rd time in 12 months so a good guard dog would be best , I have a young family so nothing mental, have been suggested a boxer.

Cheers

Any breed and why it would be good am looking for

The only dog I would recommend is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, they have everything you need, they are great with kids (ask any owner they can be very protective) can be very affectionate, can take as much exercise as you can manage, and they take no shit from other dogs (although it takes them a while to get wound up, the only trouble is it takes a while for them to calm down,

I would go for a bitch if I were you, as they tend to be a little calmer and less boisterous, I can walk mine off her lead along the street and she just trots along side me, I often see a women with a couple of little kids in a pushchair and the dog quite happily walking off the lead and just sits down outside the shops.

Boxers are nice dogs but they tend to be a bit mental and they slaver a lot!
I second this, Staffies are mint.

Yep me too, I've kept them for years, brilliant with the kids and joe robber wont go there.

It's well documented that Akita's will go for other dogs, as they were not bred to be in contact with or live in groups of other dogs. That's why in every breed standard book it says to keep them on the lead in the park. They are perfect family pets the rest of the time, but unfortunately mental outside. I think a dog needs to run off the lead, to get the blood pumping and muscles working, so for me I would always be on edge with an Akita.

German shepherd - Faithful to the death

over the last 18 years i have had three, two lived with me and we took off on holiday and the next door neighbour was looking after them coming in and feeding them taking them out etc, they were that soft they let thievs in and sat and watched, the other nearly took mrs marco's arm off and put her in hospital for a week, allways buy from a well recognised breeder like my first two the later came from what i would call a bac street breeder and went mad expext to pay £400 pluss and allways look at the parents
