Yeah, well, here’s what I see. It wasn’t always like this. This thread used to have some Trump supporters/defenders. The brave/smarter ones mea-culpaed months or years ago; the rest slunk off in embarrassment. Or cowardice.

Now we find some of them on other threads spouting oddly similar rhetoric to what Trump and his followers do, rationalizing the suffering of others not like them, justifying authoritarianism, blaming victims, building windmills to tilt at because the most important physical, personal embodiment of their political leanings (the “leader of the free world”) is an incompetent, venal criminal monster.

In the last forty-eight-hours a massive 62% of all bets placed in the 2020 US Election odds market have been on Donald Trump.

I have a bad feeling.

The incumbent always has an advantage, what may be underpriced is a repeat of 2016 where Trump loses the popular vote by an even bigger margin but still gets the win via the electoral college.

What then for the US? Will some States refuse to accept the result? Will there be court cases over voter suppression? Can the predominantly white and predominantly rural areas continue to try and enforce their vision on an increasingly hostile majority?

If the Democrats take the Senate and keep the House how long would a Trump second term last given the popular vote and the list of crimes Trump commits on an daily basis and how badly will that split the US?

And in the background there is still Covid and it will be winter.

One actually used that exact word: purifying.

I have a bad feeling.

There was plenty of money for Trump even before this Convention, his odds had tumbled from 15/8 to 6/4, now he's gone to 10/11 joint Fav with Biden. The money is still getting shovelled on too.

Its pratically 100% return on your money to back Biden to oust this Twat which in normal circumstances is near certain. But Trump has spewed his Bullshit/Lies Propaganda & Brainwashed enough Americans to vote him in, Again.

Indeed, but that has, in many ways, been more aspirational than practical in America for much of it’s history. Adherence to the First Amendment ideal has been *better* than in other nations, but not absolute. *White* Christians have traditionally had quite a bit of power in government (whilst other religions, and non-white people practising them, have been marginalised), which can be seen in various laws, regulations, and political actions over the years.

And the exceptions generally further prove their “rule”.

All of that said, I was referring to why evangelicals and some Christians-at-large seemingly nonsensically support Trump, and that is partly down to the perception of a loss of that power they have had over the decades, in tandem with what they see is the degradation of societal values and the moral supremacy of Christian doctrine.

Many evangelicals see Trump and Pence as restoring their “rightful” power and stemming the tide of wickedness and depravity.

I've written before about the transition in rhetoric from left-leaning non-Christians about evangelicals. Once it was "we don't share your religious beliefs", which is fine. Over time, however, I think rhetoric escalated to "I disagree with your beliefs" to "your beliefs are factually wrong" to "your beliefs are immoral". I can see how such a change would create a significant backlash in a community grounded in literal Biblical truth. Of course, on top of this is the community of shysters and grifters and conmen/women and outright criminals who will exploit Christian believers for their own benefit. The harder folks cling to religion as a life raft in a scary world, the easier it is to steal them blind if you can convince them you're on their side. As it ever was.

Yes, this shift is actually referenced in the article I shared and we’ve discussed it previously.

Much of this is indeed down to the grifters taking advantage, evidenced by widespread evangelical support of Trump.

She's a doctor. The one he had an affair with that ended his 3rd marriage last year, the ex-wife being his previous mistress whilst married to his 2nd wife, that wife being the girlfriend he started dating just before he divorced his first wife ... who, rumour has it, was a 2nd cousin.
